People of the world, the information, provided by the international mass media is no true. Russia DID NOT ATTACK Georgia!
07.08.2008 at 22:00 Georgia attacked South Ossetia, the troops rolled in.
At 3:30 08.08.2008 tanks of the Georgian armies have entered the city of Tskhinvali, the capital of the South Ossetian Republic.
Whole city was shelling by heavy artillery all day long, there were fights with use of tanks and heavy munition, which were used against both ossetic militia and non-combatants.

2000 civillians were killed during Georgian attack.

Russian peacemakers have arrived to South Ossetia in the evening of 08.08.2008 for settlement of the conflict and peace conduction in republic and protection of Russian citizens, living on territory of South Ossetia (approx. 80% of South Ossetian population).
Georgia has attacked South Ossetia on the opening day of 2008 Olympiad, it is top of cruelty and cynicism.

Georgia was close to being part of the NATO Alliance...

One of the founding principles of NATO is "If one nation under NATO is attacked, ALL members of NATO are attacked and will defend that one nation against aggression"...

So if Georgia was attacked by Russia AFTER they entered NATO, they'd have to deal with all of NATO, so they attacked before that happened...

Of course, NATO has the right to react anyway, but I don't think they will...

Yes, I noticed in my reading, Georgia attacked areas that are --independent?
Georgia overreacted and the Russians also overreacted. What else could have been done, I don't know, as I am not current on all of the politics of former Soviet block countries.
Could you please clarify (I know there have been mounting tensions) what you perceive precipitated the Georgia attack?
What it looks like to many here in the states is Russia interfering in a civil war. But of course an ally would not stand idly by and see 2000 people killed without some input. I personally wish cooler heads would have prevailed. It appears (to some) that Russia was waiting for a chance to prove they needed to intercede somewhere to gain more territory? Again, I apologize for my lack of knowledge of your regional politics.
