Bin Laden's driver convicted at Gitmo

Quote:
GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- A military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Wednesday convicted Osama bin Laden's former driver of supporting terror but acquitted him on other charges.

The conviction of Salim Ahmed Hamdan, 37, followed a two-week trial during which prosecutors tried to paint him as an integral part of al-Qaida but the defense insisted he was merely a civilian employee and was being made a scapegoat.

A hearing was held Wednesday afternoon to determine his punishment -- a possible life sentence.

The Washington Post (NYSE:WPO) reported Hamdan was convicted of providing material support of terrorism but acquitted of conspiring with bin Laden to commit terrorist attacks.

The trial was the first military tribunal since World War II. Eighty other Guantanamo detainees are awaiting prosecution.
One down plenty to go...

The ACLU must be fuming...

GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba, Aug. 7 -- A former driver for Osama bin Laden was sentenced by a military jury Thursday to 5 1/2 years in prison for supporting terrorism, a far shorter term than demanded by government prosecutors. The judge gave Salim Ahmed Hamdan credit for five years and one month of his pretrial incarceration at Guantanamo Bay, making him eligible for release from custody in five months.Bin Laden Driver Gets 51/2 Years; U.S. Sought 30 - washingtonpost.com
As the article indicates, the sentence can be viewed as fair since he played a minor role, and anyway, he can and will probably still be detained till "the campaign against terrorism is deemed over."

He was a driver...sure, you can't exactly chauffeur someone like Osama bin Laden around and not be aware of his nefarious activities. But to go from that and make the conclusion that he played an integral role in Al-Qaeda is a big leap without supporting evidence. So I think it was probably a good decision.

You're thinking that the guy is nothing more than a car driver. In a position like OBL's, only the most trustworthy and well-vetted people are allowed that close to him. If he wasn't a big wheel, he wouldn't be anywhere near OBL in a position that requires that much trust.
