Default First Lady Won't Visit SC?!?!

Clyburn cites S.C. hostility

Quote:
U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn said Friday that a conversation with White House staff left him with the sense that a hostile environment in South Carolina is keeping the first lady from visiting.

The high-ranking South Carolina Democrat said he has received more than 100 invitations for Michelle Obama. But this summer when he brought one of those requests to her staff on behalf of his alma mater, South Carolina State University, Clyburn said her security was an issue.

The conversation came after former Richland County GOP activist Rusty DePass suggested on Facebook in June that an escaped zoo gorilla was not harmful because it was probably one of Mrs. Obama's ancestors. DePass' comment was coupled with a remark in July from U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, a Republican. DeMint said that beating the president's health care plan would be a 'Waterloo' moment for Obama.

Congressman Joe Wilson's 'You lie!' outburst during Obama's joint address on health care reform last month didn't help either, Clyburn said.

'A lot of it has to do with the fact that the climate in South Carolina just is not good, and that's a shame,' Clyburn said at a roundtable discussion at his Columbia office.

'I do believe it is keeping her away from this state,' he said
.
The first thing I thought was "Hold the words of a couple against the whole state...REAL mature."...

But I read something that added to that which explains more...

Quote:
Yes, a moronic South Carolina GOP grunt wrote something shameful about the first lady and a couple of politicians made bold statements about the president and his policies. How do those comments indicate a statewide climate hostile enough to jeopardize Mrs. Obamaís security?

Simple answer: they donít.

The White House isnít keeping Michelle Obama out of South Carolina to protect her from assassins in white hoods. South Carolina is being kept off her itinerary to send a message: embarrassing the president will not be tolerated. (Are you listening Joe Wilson?) Dissent will be contorted into proof that racist backwater bumpkins in the south are undermining Obamaís presidency and endangering the very life of the first lady with their dangerous coded rhetoric.

Who cares about smearing the people of South Carolina? After all, itís just a red state.
There's nothing like uniting a divided nation by punishing states...

South Carolina is one of the most prejudiced states in the union even in modern times. I know because my Dad and step dad were from there. Yes there are people who aren't like that but all in all I'd say it's still pretty much old south mentality (before the sixties) in how most white people think.
That being said if you look into history and psychology, when in your mind you demean a creature, you can easily transfer that to violence. Especially where the air is permeated with your neighbors' prejudice.
She is right too avoid South Carolina. It could easily become another Dallas if not for the President, for members of his immediate family.

What a load of crap!! You're stuck in the Jim Crow era mindset where every state south of the Mason/Dixon line is lynching blacks, pass miscegenation laws and forcing blacks to ride at the back of the bus. The reality is that this nothing more than political gamesmanship. The First Lady is using this to punish SC for daring to elect someone who would speak thier mind. If she really cared about unity and harmony, SC would be FIRST on her list of places to visit so that she could spread her charm around and bring people together. But people like you will create false fears of assassination to back up the political BS that the WH is engaging in.

A certain amount of risk though exaggerated.. goes with the territory of being first lady. Michelle should visit and show her courage and her sense of duty.

I never thought about it when I lived in Charleston as everyone I met were great people, both black and white. I had no problem with any of them.

maybe this is why the first mama is afraid of SC, flying burrito's!

================================================== ========

from the smokinggun.com

OCTOBER 14--A South Carolina teenager is facing a felony charge for throwing a "deadly missile" at a moving vehicle. The armament in question was a burrito. According to the below Hernando County Sheriff's Office report, the 15-year-old suspect, a passenger in a Dodge, allegedly threw the burrito Saturday afternoon at John Addie's Honda as the cars traveled alongside each other on a Florida street. Cops discovered burrito remnants inside and outside the vehicle, as well as on Addie, who was not injured when struck by the flying foodstuff (somehow, Addie's Honda suffered a chipped windshield during the incident). After tracing the Dodge's license plate, cops confronted the teenager, who admitted throwing the burrito as a "prank." He claimed that no other object was thrown at the Honda, though cops concluded that there was evidence that "a hard object caused damage" to Addie's car. The admitted burrito tosser, pictured in the above mug shot, was booked into jail and later released into his father's custody.

I grew up in the South. I know how people are and some places where a lot of newbies have migrated in, it has changed a lot. But I was in SC not long ago, less than 2 years. There is the 'you leave me alone; I'll leave you alone' attitude, and there is the more grumbling kind of attitude among whites. They are not overt with it due to political correctness and the fact their general personalities are not overt. They are not the bullying kind you find in parts of Georgia. It's more subtle and people only speak freely when they feel comfortable to do so.

I have no idea what the whitehouse agenda is. I just think it's smart she stays away from there.

BTW you wanna see the true old south, go to Tupelo, Mississippi and travel down the back roads . Find a small town and enter a cafe.
It'll blow your "We're all over that now" mind.

I to grew up in several southern states part of my childhood and was in the south again when I was in the Army. Georgia and N. Carolina where I met this girl from Delight, AK. who I went to vist her and family B-4 going to the Nam.
I traveled by car and the deeper I got in the south the more I saw the ugly side of it. The poor housing and the attitudes of hate for people of color.

While married in the 1997 to 2006 period we visited several southern states where my wife had friends/family..
Things had changed a lot in housing and attitudes but I did notice many older teens were prejudice and felt that that had to come from the homes of these teens in Georgia. We went to several sports games in the Jr. and High schools.
But on the whole it seemed to me to have improved some at least on the face of it all.

I think this is politics and that if Obama wants to reunite this country the WH and Dems should play the high ground no matter what.

Certain regions are pretty bad, especially the rural areas. However, there are some places where the people are more open-minded, like Greenville or the bigger cities. I have lived all over the southeast (except for Georgia), and I can honestly say SC is not the worst place. The worst place that I have ever lived was Alabama. The second worst is North Carolina, again rural areas in the mountains. I suspected a few of my family members there are part of the KKK (seriously). There are some scary people in those mountains.
