Ocasio-Cortez under fire for concentration camp remarks

Quote:
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) created a new political firestorm Tuesday, stating that detention centers housing immigrants are “exactly” like concentration camps and then doubling down in the face of GOP criticism.

“The U.S. is running concentration camps on our southern border, and that is exactly what they are,” Ocasio-Cortez said during an Instagram Live appearance on Monday night.

“If that doesn’t bother you ... I want to talk to the people that are concerned enough with humanity to say that ‘never again’ means something.”

She spoke the same night President Trump in a message on Twitter said that Immigration and Customs Enforcement next week would begin deporting “millions” of immigrants who are living in the U.S. illegally.

Republicans accused Ocasio-Cortez of demeaning victims of Holocaust death camps with the comparison.

“Please @AOC do us all a favor and spend just a few minutes learning some actual history. 6 million Jews were exterminated in the Holocaust. You demean their memory and disgrace yourself with comments like this,” tweeted Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), the third-ranking House Republican.

“This is wrong @AOC. These are incredibly dangerous and disgusting words that demean the millions murdered during the Holocaust,” tweeted Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.).

And Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) pushed back against Ocasio-Cortez’s definition of a concentration camp, noting that many of the migrants detained for trying to cross the border illegally are asylum-seekers awaiting court proceedings.

“Clearly I need to explain that, in concentration camps, people are unjustly sought out and confined. This isn’t what is happening at the border,” Crenshaw wrote.

The vice president of the National Border Patrol Council, a labor union that represents border agents, also pushed back during an appearance on Fox News on Tuesday.

“It’s disgusting to compare concentration camps to what the men and women are doing here protecting our country,” Art Del Cueto said on “America’s Newsroom.”

Ocasio-Cortez doubled down in the face of criticism, tweeting that the Trump administration has established “concentration camps” where immigrants are “being brutalized with dehumanizing conditions and dying.”
I'm 99% sure no one will ask Chuck Schumer his thoughts on the matter, but if someone ever did, I'm guessing his response would be "How 'bout those Red Sox?!?!?!"...

AOC says something stupid? I'm shocked. That women is one of the biggest dolt's ever elected to Congress. The real crime will be if she is reelected given her propensity for displaying her incredible lack of intelligence.

AOC obviously tries to go for the 'shock' value along with stupidity.

Perhaps she should team up with Howard Stern, another useless waste of space who thinks shock is a good substitute for intelligence.

Concentration camps have been used throughout history and the Jews are not the only people to suffer from being sent to concentration camps. Japanese were sent to concentration camps in the United States during WW II (that was only declared unconstitutional last year in the Hawaii v Trump decision by the Supreme Court).

Today tens of thousands Hispanics are being held in detention centers without cause and those detention centers certainly meet the criteria of concentration camps. These are Hispanics that have applied for asylum, that grants them the right to be in the United States, don't represent a threat to society and they don't represent a threat of flight to avoid prosecution.

They're being imprisoned because of their ethnic background and not because there's a legal foundation for detaining them to protect society or to prevent them from avoiding legal proceedings in the future where they would attempt to flee from the country.

Release these Hispanic people instead of locking them up without any justifiable reason.

Based upon the corruption, brutality, inhumanity, immorality, dishonesty, and incompetence of the Trump administration the White House is the dirtiest house in America and there's no known cleanser that with remove the stains of the Trump Administration.

Yes. Just because they are "Hispanic", and not because of their claim that they were forced to trespass into the country to claim asylum.

Anybody ever wonder what would have happened to Europe if every person there whose country had been invaded by Hitler's forces had fled to other countries?

I'm not sure you understand, but the people in these detention centers BROKE THE LAW by illegally entering the country. What other criminals do you want released? Any that would vote Democrat I imagine.

Applying for asylum is not a crime.

The fact that you believe they are being detained because of their ethnic background, shows that you really do not understand what is happening on the subject. Claiming asylum without verifying facts of their claim, is what some would prefer to happen, but in reality, it does not give them free run if they actually entered into country PRIOR to claiming asylum. For some, it is a blatant attempt to justify their breaking our laws, and still expecting all the benefits.

May I recommend your attempting to unlawfully enter a foreign country, and claim asylum there after doing so, and let us know how that works for you.

Don't kid yourself, he knows what is going on, he is just parroting the DNC talking points. He just has a flair for being long winded about it.
