Trump lawyer disputes Dem rationale for requesting tax returns

President Trump's attorney has responded House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal's (D-Mass.) argument from two days earlier that the panel is authorized by law to see a copy of the president's returns from 2013-2018. Never mind that the President's tax returns are audited by the IRS or that President Trump ran and won without releasing his tax returns, Democrats must be able to politicize the IRS to target President Trump.

Trump's lawyer specifically objects to Congressional snooping based on.

Quote:

That it is limited to a single President, seeks tax information from before the President took office, asks no questions about IRS policy, and does not even wait for the IRS to finish its ongoing examinations (and any resulting appeals) reveals that Chairman Neal's request is nothing more than an attempt to exercise constitutional authority that Congress does not possess," Consovoy wrote in a letter to Brent McIntosh, general counsel at the Treasury Department.

In their typical short sighted Resistance thinking Democrats ignore the implications of a politicized Congress targeting opposition party members by forcing them to release their tax returns. :o

if they're smart and honest (which I'm not saying all Democrat pols are), they will compare investments and money earned at times when he was doing deals with other countries and domestic entities.

The reason is to do what Trump should have done; release them on his own to show himself above even the perception of dishonest and at this point not a treasonous person or criminal under emoluments law.

So what you're claiming is that if we catch him having committed treason or enriched himself from public office, that that is just a 'fishing expedition'?
fish on!

Both 'excuses' you listed would only be possible during the time he has been POTUS. Which means tax returns for 2016 and 2017. What is the excuse for 2013, 2014, 2015?

One doesn't demand, exclusively, to see personal data TRYING to find a crime. One requests personal data to SUPPORT a crime already found.

If you believe otherwise, you are not just foolish, you are willing to have people treated as criminals without proof, and the Constitution is so much toilet paper....

In other words, a fishing expedition.

If you catch him having committed treason or enriching himself, then and only then you might have a case. You haven't, You won't. You don't.

Brilliant, the new standard is "what Trump should have done" determined by Resistance Democrats. Never mind that Trump was elected President without disclosing his tax returns and there is no legal requirement to release his returns. It's typical Resistance Democrat lynch mob tactics, burn down constraints on weaponizing Congressional oversight for partisan political purposes in a headlong rush to overturn the 2016 election. :o

The demand is for Trump's and only Trump's tax returns beginning in 2013, 4 years before Trump became President. Oh yeah, Trump had a magic wand, like Obama said, that enabled him to know he'd be President so he could enrich himself from public office even before he held public office. :eek
