Senators reach Russia sanctions deal

Senate leaders struck an agreement Monday to roll out additional sanctions on Russia and make it difficult for the President to lift them. The Senate Foreign Relations and Banking Committee announced a deal that had the support of the committee's top Democrats and Republicans that's expected to attract wide bipartisan support. The proposal would provide for a congressional review process if the executive branch eases current sanctions on Russia. And it imposes new sanctions in a number of categories, including those "conducting malicious cyber activity on behalf of the Russian government" and "supplying weapons to the Assad regime." The measure would also authorize assistance for European countries concerned about Russian aggression, and require a study on the "flow of illicit finance involving Russia and a formal assessment of US economic exposure to Russian state-owned entities." The legislation is expected to be attached as an amendment to an unrelated bill involving sanctions on Iran.

The issue saw renewed attention after Yahoo News recently reported that Trump administration officials began developing plans to lift sanctions almost as soon as they took office.
Senators on both sides of the political aisle are trying to make Russia sanctions "Trump proof". Trump has hinted at removing the Russia sanctions despite Russian digital/disinformation/troll attacks on the US during the 2016 elections.

Yahoo reports using anonymous sources and the Senate committee responds trying to hobble the President with a preemptive strike.

Notice how the article caption attempts to pump up the importance of the development portraying the passage out of committee as "Senators" making it appear the Senate had taken the action rather than just a committee.

Trump-proof Russian sanctions will pass both houses. Unlike Trump, Congress generally understands that Moscow waged hybrid warfare against the US during the 2016 election.

It's a shame that Congress has to pass safeguard-legislation to deter Donald Trump from giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

Wow, you can see the future course Congress will take passing preemptive legislation based on the rumor Trump will lift Russian sanctions. It is a shame to see the anti Trump lynch mob insisting Congress must act to counter some made up Trump threat to cozy up to the Russians then whine about how they must deal with the imaginary threat.

The hysteria of the Russian boogeymen engaging in "warfare" of one variety or another against the US has to be constantly ramped up lest the lack of evidence cause it to collapse altogether. Even the much ballyhooed "Russian" hacking of the DNC is based on so-called evidence produced by consultants hired by the Democrat party and super secret intelligence information known only to a select few. In truth, sanctions or no sanctions the cyber attacks are not going to attack, pretending that sanctions against the Russians will protect us is partisan political nonsense.

That is not to say the Russians along with the Chinese and numerous governmental and nongovernmental groups aren't actively attempting to hack US computer systems, they are. The emphasis ought to be on improving our defenses at least to a level where garden variety phishing attacks like the fabulously successful one on the Democrat server and glaring security holes like using "password" for a password, become things of the past. But a common sense approach to cyber security doesn't feed the hate Trump narrative so it is ignored in favor of braying about solutions that will not succeed.

Update. A GOP Congressman in the House (Sessions/R/TX) has stalled the Russia sanctions bill passed 98-2 in the Senate. Big Oil (ExxonMobile, Chevron, etc) has complained that the Russia sanctions bill restricts their ability to work on projects with Russia state oil monopoly Roseneft outside of Russia.

Exxon and other oil giants join Trump in opposing tougher Russia sanctions

Imagine that, a member of Congress recognizing sanctions supposedly to penalize Russians actually hurt American companies. Better to succumb to the partisan hysteria of the Russian boogeyman.

Imagine that. A Republican Representative places his gerrymandered big-oil district above the best national interests of the United States.
