It's not a matter of 'Republicans' addressing welfare spending, it's the lack of government addressing the waste and fraud within the programs. I have no issue with temporarily helping those who have stumbled, but those who choose not to work who can work, but instead take what they can from the programs, are the actual drain.

Poverty is subjective to some extent. While people are now constantly fed statements that cause divisiveness regarding 'income inequality', and evil corporations, instead of offered opportunities that can help them increase their income through training programs.

Contrary to some opinions, there are no Americans 'starving', many have health issues from malnutrition, regardless of their actual body weight. Some households have 'food insecurity' issues, but the billboards claim 1 in 5 children... as with many things in the now, hyperbole and shock value are the rage, instead of facts.
From what I've seen of most of Shiva's positions, they can be solved by simply redistributing the wealth.

It's all well and good to state that people should be investing for their future retirement but when they don't receive enough compensation from their labor to afford that then it's a failure of capitalism.

In the 1930's it was found that half of the American people that reached retirement age did not have the financial assets necessary to provide the income necessary for retirement. In addressing this historical problem the Democrats under FDR got it half right and half wrong.

They got it right by correctly identifying this was a joint failure by both the employers and the employees. The employers weren't providing enough income and the employees weren't investing because of a lack of income. The Social Security tax where each contribute equally is based upon this shared responsibility.

They got it wrong by addressing the income necessity that was the symptom of the problem as opposed to the building of the assets necessary to provide the income. You don't fix a problem by addressing the symptom.

We know they got it wrong because in the 1960's the same problem returned with health insurance at retirement. Roughly 50% of households couldn't afford health insurance when they retired because they didn't have the financial assets to provide the income necessary to fund the insurance. Democrats under LBJ got it half right again by the co-funding responsibility of the employer and employee and got it half wrong again by providing the insurance under Medicare as opposed to building the personal assets of the workers to provide the income to purchase insurance at retirement.

We see this same problem with Republicans in addressing "welfare spending" because the spending is a symptom of the problem. The problem is poverty so to reduce the welfare spending we need to reduce the poverty.

Addressing symptoms as opposed to the problems never works. It just allows the problem to get worse over time. We're seeing that with Social Security, Medicare, and Welfare in the United States as the problem behind the spending keeps driving the spending up.
History shows? Where is the evidence? Or, is this another of your claims? Even if we suspend disbelief for a moment to entertain the notion that half the people don't have sufficient income to fund retirement assets it quickly falls apart under examination. The poverty rate is nowhere near 50% so it's a matter of choice to fail to save for retirement. SS and Medicare provide perverse incentives to avoid saving for retirement.

Everyone wants to retire comfortably but make the sacrifices to set aside funds is too painful. Don't worry, the socialist Pied Piper comes along with an excuse, blame employers and a solution big government. Never mind that SS and Medicare are vote buying schemes that are bankrupt.

Social Security will run a $69 billion cash-flow deficit this year. And that’s the good news. Every year after, that shortfall will worsen. All together, Social Security is facing future shortfalls worth more than $24.9 trillion. The so-called trust fund is simply an accounting measure, specifying how much money the federal government owes the program out of general revenues, not an actual asset that can be used to pay benefits.

Medicare is in even worse financial shape, despite the fact that health care costs have slowed in the past decade. Economists debate whether the slowdown will continue, but even if it does, Medicare faces unfunded liabilities approaching $48 trillion. And, if we return to double digit health care inflation, we could see Medicare’s liabilities swell to more than $88 trillion.

That is a total of nearly $113 trillion in unfunded liability. Meeting these requirements would call for massive tax increases and devoting all of the Federal budget to the two programs. Yep they are broke.

FDR and LBJ made promises for future generations to pay to get political benefits selfishly for themselves. They ought to be reviled for their corrupt political tricks.

There is nothing wrong with the Social Security System, and it would not even be in the news today if crooked politicians hadn’t stolen $2.7 trillion from it. If we took the cap off, which we will…eventually, we will be solvent.

The comment is completely delusional, unconnected to reality. I note the absence of any attempt to support the vapid rhetoric or to challenge the information presented.

The law creating SS specified the so-called trust fund would be held in the form of special purpose bonds held by the Treasury. The cash generated by this sham sale goes into the general fund where it is spent. There is no mechanism for the surplus to be invested like it would be in a private annuity.

Now that surpluses are a thing of the past, the bonds are presented for payment from current year tax revenues. Even you ought to be able to see where this is headed, the SS trust fund will demand more and more from current taxpayers as baby boomers retire until it's exhausted.

Lifting the caps on taxable earnings doesn’t solve the SS problem. Even if it creates a temporary surplus that will simply get turned into more trust fund IOU, problems for future generations to solve.
