House to examine plan for United Nations to regulate the Internet

The proposal is backed by China, Russia, Brazil, India and other UN members, and would give the UN’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU) more control over the governance of the Internet.

It’s an unpopular idea with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle in Congress, and officials with the Obama administration have also criticized it.

“We're quite concerned,” Larry Strickling, the head of the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration, said in an interview with The Hill earlier this year.

He said the measure would expose the Internet to “top-down regulation where it's really the governments that are at the table, but the rest of the stakeholders aren't.”

At a hearing earlier this month, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) also criticized the proposal. He said China and Russia are "not exactly bastions of Internet freedom."

"Any place that bans certain terms from search should not be a leader in international Internet regulatory frameworks," he said, adding that he will keep a close eye on the process.

Yet the proposal could come up for a vote at a UN conference in Dubai in December.

I think the headline is misleading...

I have a feeling no more than five or ten congressweasels are actually "examining" this, and the rest of them are begging for this to come to a vote as soon as possible so they can overwhelmingly reject it and give the UN a big ol', well-deserved middle finger...

Expect a 400+ rejection when it comes to the floor...Thankfully...and anyone voting FOR it is an a-hole...

How much of this UN crap do we need to put up with? Seems like we are well past a good time to vote ourselves out and stop all funding.

Yeah these are the kids the UN tolerates. I hope they treat em like step children-like move and don't tell em or something.

Oh, I disagree. I think that a very large minority of the House members would sell their left kidneys for a chance to control the Internet.

To my mind, more than any other single development in the last 50 years, the 'Net challenges traditional power structures.

I agree that anyone in congress who agrees with this measure needs a one way ticket out.

I'm waiting for the term "closed door hearings."

Also, major contributions from shadowy foundations to Congressmen who support this.

Look for editorials about "protecting truth."

Perhaps. But I am also historically aware. General literacy, the printing press, the free press, even the bible being printed and distributed in the common language of a country have all been opposed by entrenched power at one time or another.
