I wish that he could have found a better bill to make his point with, but I doubt that there was one that would have given the issue the exposure that this one did. It's a crappy way to have to deal with a crappy situation, but unless it was high profile, there's no way it would have gotten the attention that it needed. I don't like it. I think that it sucks ditchwater. But I also recognize why he did it. If you pass a law, you need to obey that law. Congress wants to bypass the law they just made and they are as much to blame in this as anyone. Had they funded the bill the way they should have, there would be no issue, but instead they chose to ignore the law they just passed and pass yet another unfunded piece of legislation. Bunning's trying to make a point and he chose a crappy time to make it, yet without soemthing that gets this kind of attention, he would have never gotten the exposure that this issue needed. The guy's putting his carreer on the line to make this point, because if he loses, he's painted as the biggest ass**** in the country and loses pretty much any chance at re-election. But if he wins and Congress is forced to obey the law it just passed, then he's seen as a heroic reformer and most likely still considered an ass****, but an ass**** who wants Congress to keep it's word.
I wonder how much pork Bunning has accepted before he decided to make this point. I think he is a phoney. I think this was a partisan move to play a game. If he had always been known as someone who was strict in these matters then his stance would have seemed consistant. But he is not and never has been. That is my point. If it were not for a democrat administration he would have almost nothing to say at all.

So that justifies allowing Congress to ignore a law they just passed. Bunning's a politician and thus not to be trusted, but does this mean that we ignore the point that he's trying to make? Maybe he's doing it to score political points and/or get publicity, but does this mean that we should allow Congress to break the law?? Leave Bunning and any potential motivation out of the discussion and just focus on what he's trying to accomplish. He's making a valid point, using the law that was just passed. He's an ass****, but he's an ass**** making a valid point.

Any comments on Congress not obeying the law it just passed or is this going to strictly be a "ignore the problems of the Dems. and stick to attacking the Reps." thread??

in all fairness, I think this temporary extension comes under 'emergency' maneuvers.

And during that time there was NO "pay-as-you-go" bill either passed by Congress or signed by the president...

Unlike NOW...

But that's not Bunning's fault...

That's the fault of the DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP that waited until the VERY LAST SECOND to re-up the benefits...

Let's skip the rhetoric and look at what ACTUALLY HAPPENED...

Weeks ago...when the Dem leadership KNEW that unemployment was going to run out (Unless you think it snuck up on them), they waited until one week beforehand to address it...

At the same time, they passed the "pay-as-you-go" bill (which Obama signed) saying that future spending will HAVE to have the payments already accounted for...

They were under the impression that they could ignore the normal legislative process and simply pass it on a unanimous vote. But by doing so, they would BREAK THE "Pay-as-you-go" LAW that was just passed...The DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP was going to pretend that the bill they passed and the president signed meant absolutely nothing...

So Bunning did what politicians SHOULD be doing...saying no one should be ABOVE THE LAW...especially one in which still hasn't had the ink dry on it yet...

If the DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP did what they were SUPPOSED to do...account for the payments and not skip the normal legislative process (and take of this long before the 11th hour), then Bunning would have no problem being the first person in line to vote for it...
