Post Google will soon ban fake news sites from using its ad network

Quote:
Today, Google announced that its advertising tools will soon be closed to websites that promote fake news, a policy that could cut off revenue streams for publications that peddle hoaxes on platforms like Facebook. The decision comes at a critical time for the tech industry, whose key players have come under fire for not taking neccesary steps to prevent fake news from proliferating across the web during the 2016 US election. It’s thought that, given the viral aspects of fake news, social networks and search engines were gamed by partisan bad actors intending to influence the outcome of the race.

"Moving forward, we will restrict ad serving on pages that misrepresent, misstate, or conceal information about the publisher, the publisher's content, or the primary purpose of the web property," a Google spokesperson said in a statement given to Reuters. This policy includes fake news sites, the spokesperson confirmed. Google already prevents its AdSense program from being used by sites that promote violent videos and imagery, pornography, and hate speech.

The issue of fake news on social media grabbed national attention earlier this summer, when Gizmodo reported that the team at Facebook responsible for its Trending Topics news list was suppressing links from conservative sources. The controversy called into question Facebook’s role as a primary source of news for tens of millions of Americans. The episode reportedley “paralyzed” Facebook, according to a recent report from The New York Times, leaving its leadership unwilling to make any drastic changes to the News Feed to curb the viral growth of fake news.

This is long overdue.
The amount of fake news crap is ridiculous. If Dan Rather had put out one of these, he would have been fired already.
But this type of crap has been allowed to pump out continuously for too long....

One wonders just how much of those fake news sites are going to come from which side.

Having said that Google has the right to accept or reject any ad they choose.

I hope they don't decide to delete hits from the browser. I sort those out myself, ot go somewhere else.

What about the Onion? I'd hate to see them go.

You preparing the groundwork to try and save right-wing lies?

Facebook already expressed its concern over removing fake news for fear of getting backlash from conservatives.
Facebook's Fight Against Fake News Was Undercut by Fear of Conservative Backlash

Evidently they really like their lies...

No. I want all available articles when I research a subject.

If Facebook worries about only RW backlash, then my fears are confirmed.

It may be wasted, but the article never said they would only censor right-wing fake articles.
It said their fear was that right-wingers would backlash. Left-wingers maybe more interested in honesty, eh?

Right-wingers have an outrage machine all their own. Advance backlash regardless of the validity of the complaint.

And you're free to "research" what you please even with Facebook preventing fake news.

The thing I find amusing is how the right got so damn self-righteous over Dan Rather being taken for a ride ...
... but in their own news, some will happily repeat claims from WND and similar sites over and over and over again, regardless of whether or not they are shown to be b.s. sources.

Where was this "research it for yourself" attitude when it came to Dan Rather's "sin"?

The right relies on fake news. It will ruin their sources if they have to rely on facts.

I have no problem with a Truth in advertising and a notice of who we are and what we do.
But to me this is a 1st (8rd step?) step in Google putting even more control on what's "REAL" instead of being a search engine it's a search filter.
Im sure MOST don't like un-announced FAKE NEWS sites but what exactly do they consider fake
? does the public get to see which? or does google decide in the background?
O K so it's let say they stick to humor and provocation sites., what's stopping them from hindering others types of "news" so that only "APPROVED" news sites are accepted. why stop at news. what about medical information? what about alt energy... history, Information about certain nations?

whose to stop them?

the very reason why competition is GOOD. right now they are a near monopoly.
we already know they censor China's Internet service for the Chinese gov't..
Google is really a player to be trusted on freedom of information and free access issues.

In a closely related article, Google has determined nothing of value is coming from Kansas anymore and has deleted it from their popular Google Earth product.
