Hockeytown is home to the Stanley Cup - again.

For the fourth time in 11 seasons, the Detroit Red Wings are the Stanley Cup champions. They used experience and grit to knock out the young up-and-coming Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night with a 3-2 victory in Game 6 of the finals.

Following in the footsteps of Gordie Howe and Steve Yzerman, new captain Nicklas Lidstrom led the Red Wings to the title. Detroit's 11th NHL championship team is the first in league history to be captained by a European.

''I've been over here for a long time and I watched Steve Yzerman hoist it for three times in the past,'' the Swedish defenseman said. ''I'm very proud of being the first European. I'm very proud of being a captain of the Red Wings .''

The celebration came two nights later than expected. The Penguins forced the series back to Pennsylvania by tying Game 5 with 34.3 seconds left in regulation and winning it shortly before 1 a.m. in Detroit on Petr Sykora 's power-play goal in triple overtime.

Undeterred, the Red Wings wrapped up their fourth straight series on the road in these playoffs. Detroit is third in NHL titles, trailing fellow Original Six clubs Montreal and Toronto.

It took a little longer than expected but the Red Wings got the job done!

Congrats to the Red Wings for the present...

This was probably their last shot at it due to age...

And my beloved Flyers went from the basement last year to the conference finals this year...so the expectation next year is to be where the Red Wings are now...

Red Wings goalie Hasek retires following Cup triumph - NHL - Yahoo! Sports

AP - Jun 8, 10:59 pm EDT 1 of 3 NHL Gallery DETROIT (AP)—Dominik Hasek, the goaltender known as the Dominator, retired Monday because he said he lacked the motivation for a 17th season.

“I don’t feel today that I’m ready to compete on the highest level,” Hasek said during a news conference at Joe Louis Arena. “Not because of the physical things, but because I need motivation every day. … Right now I don’t feel it’s there, and I don’t want to disappoint anybody.”

Hasek’s announcement came five days after the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup in six games over Pittsburgh.

Detroit general manager Ken Holland said Hasek’s place in history is secured, calling him not only one of the greatest goalies of his era—along with Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur—but also one of the best in NHL history.

“He’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer,” Holland said. “And one of the greatest goaltenders to ever play the game.”
