Klitschko weighs in at 238 pounds
IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko is on course to be at his lightest fighting weight for eight years when he faces WBO champion Sultan Ibragimov at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night.
With their heavyweight unification fight less than 60 hours away, Klitschko (49-3, 44 KOs) weighed in at exactly 238 pounds on Thursday.
It is the same weight Klitschko was for his WBO title victory against Chris Byrd in Cologne in October 2000.
For his last fight, also in Cologne, against Lamont Brewster, the 6ft 6in Klitschko weighed in at 243.5 pounds.
The 6-1 Ibragimov (22-0, 17 KOs) tipped the scales at 219 pounds, the same weight as his last title defence against Evander Holyfield in October.
The weigh-in passed off without incident or controversy in the lobby of the Madison Square Garden Theater.
Both fighters talked about their excitement at fighting at the Garden on a historic night for the heavyweight division.
It will be the first unification bout since the 1999 meeting of Lennox Lewis and Holyfield at the same venue.
“I do have a special feeling about Madison Square Garden,” Klitschko said.
