Default L.A. official proposes fast-food ban for city

LOS ANGELES - A city councilwoman is proposing a moratorium on fast-food restaurants in south Los Angeles, which has more such eateries than any other part of the county.

The ordinance proposed by Councilwoman Jan Perry would stop new fast-food restaurants from opening in the area for up to two years while the city establishes a long-term plan to deal with the restaurants that have been linked to health problems.

But some in the restaurant industry criticized the moratorium proposal, which would only permit full-service, sit-down restaurants to open, as misguided.

Dennis Lombardi, foodservice strategies chief at restaurant consulting firm WD Partners, said the restriction was "like saying we're not going to allow anybody to sell Chevrolets anymore because we want people to buy nothing but Mercedes-Benzes." I just heard this on Midnight Trucking , KBOI radio in Boise, and I looked it up to see if it was B.S.
My fear as voiced by some of the callers to the radio program, is that L.A. will keep reelecting these people because enough voters think the same way as the city counsel and the ones who don't won't get off their butt and vote them out of office!
This is the same city counsel that decided to make it illegal to park an 18 wheeler in a section of town that had an existing truck stop and several other industrial type businesses!

I thought that council members are supposed to do that sort of thing. I mean if too many fast food restaurants create blight. Is that possible?

I was under the impression it was for health reasons. I don't like fast food messing up the landscape either, but I think it is wrong to not allow just one type of legal business. You can get some hefty portions of fat and sugar from a regular sit down restaurant too.
