Pittsburgh cancer center warns of cell phone risks
Quote:
PITTSBURGH - The head of a prominent cancer research institute issued an unprecedented warning to his faculty and staff Wednesday: Limit cell phone use because of the possible risk of cancer.
Herberman is basing his alarm on early unpublished data. He says it takes too long to get answers from science and he believes people should take action now — especially when it comes to children.
Cell phones emit radiofrequency energy, a type of radiation that is a form of electromagnetic radiation, according to the National Cancer Institute. Though studies are being done to see if there is a link between it and tumors of the brain and central nervous system, there is no definitive link between the two, the institute says on its Web site. I don't know. If the head of a cancer institute is telling his staff to be cautious with cell phone use, I'd be inclined to follow his lead myself. Of course, I don't have a cell phone, but if I did...
BTW This article goes right along with today's holiday. Bet you weren't aware of it. I wasn't either till I went to the post office and shopping earlier this evening. Today must be National Cell phone day! I conclude this because everywhere I went there were people talking on their phones to the exclusion of common sense. Case in point: A guy walked in front of my car while text messaging. And while I in Walmart a young woman couldn't even pay attention to her two toddlers, she was so into the holiday spirit! "Yeah, well...wait, Johnny, quit that! O.K. Uhhuh, really?! Oh wait..Maggie, put that down...Yeah I'm here..Umm-hmm..."
Have you ever turned to answer someone and they weren't talking to you. They're on the cell phone? Annoying.
