Ever struggled in vain to find your cat in the dark? Now you need worry no longer -- Korean scientists have developed a cat that glows in the dark. These two Turkish Angola cats were photographed under ultraviolet light. The cat on the left, which is a clone of the right-hand feline, had its genes modified with a florescent protein that gives off a red glow under the special light. Researchers at Gyeongsang National University in Jinju, South Korea, created the glowing kitty by altering a gene that controls skin color.
I thought this was already done years ago in Chernobyl...

I'm unsure...

I think it depends on whether or not these scientists did it for some medical or scientific experimentation or they did it because they're acting like some teenage boys thinking "it'll be cool"...

I don't see it.

Let's assume that neither the cats nor anyone (or thing) else is harmed by this experiment.

What would be unethical about it?

Would it be less ethical than selectively breeding cats for certain traits?

well, it may be that they were experimenting to see how they could insert protiens into DNA chains...

The weirdness factor is bugging me, I guess...

Actually, the article that was attached to the pictures says that they did this as a step to learning to manipulate genes for gene therepy and curing human genetic illnesses...And the other thing about those kittens is they are clones...So 2 science methods were being used...

Scientists Create Glow-in-The-Dark Cats
SOUTH KOREA (CBS13) ―
You've heard of "Hello Kitty", well how about "Glow Kitty"?

Cats are glowing in the dark in South Korea and scientists say it's an achievement that could help develop cures for human genetic diseases.

At first glance, the fluffy white kitties may look normal, but there are two big things that make them very different.

First, the cats are clones. And second, they glow.

When the felines are put under ultraviolet light, they glow a dull red. Scientists manipulated the donor cat's genetic code, then passed those changes on to the clones.

A procedure, scientists say could help develop treatments for diseases that impact both animals and humans.

I can't wait to see how we actually end up eradicating our existence. Crap like this is scary.

Recognize that I acknowledge my discomfort to be emotional and not intellectual.

It's a 'why would you do that?' kind of reaction.

Intellectually, I can see how a potentially harmless subsitution could be useful in research.

Emotionally... well, geez....

Those damned hairless dogs and cats creep me out and they are the result of natural breeding. I just can't wrap my head around why anyone would want to perpetuate those creepy things.
