Default abstinence-only sex education can be effective

Sex education classes that focus on encouraging children to remain abstinent can convince a significant proportion to delay sexual activity, researchers report in landmark study. The abstinence program had no negative effects on condom use among youth in the study, which has been a major criticism of the abstinence approach.

Gee, who would have thunk it? And all this time we were told by the left that abstinence doesn't work......

The argument is that abstinence only education doesn't work, and all of the previous data reflects that as fact, not just assertion. That means that this program MUST be doing something differently that the other programs were not.

"There is no data in this study to support the 'abstain until marriage' programs, which research proved ineffective during the Bush administration," said James Wagoner, president of Advocates for Youth.
The left was right, it didn't work in the past. This isn't the same program Bush tried, which was a waste of time and funding.

The study doesn't mention the incidence of teen pregnancy nor the incidence of STDs contracted in the different groups

The best programs are those which are "abstinence first" oriented. Unfortunately, these get lumped in by most folks with the VERY few abstinence only programs that are out there. Programs which focus on teaching kids the hazards - physically and emotionally - of promiscuous sex as the core of the program are highly effective. Make it crystal clear to a kid that being a parent at 16 means that any dreams you hope to pursue just got a whole lot tougher. Teach them that at their age, sex can be HIGHLY emotionally damaging with issues running the gamut from increased narcissism ("They all want me 'cause I'm so hot and sexy.") to huge rejection issues ("We had sex and now he won't even call me. What's wrong with me??") to learning how to depend on manipulation to get what you want ("All you've gotta do convince her that you really love her and she'll put out."). The number of things that can go wrong by having sex at an early age must be made a core teaching of any program. Unfortunately, we've lost sight of the idea that kids should be taught that thier actions can have negative consequences and have fallen into a trap of teaching them that they should do what they feel and ignore the old-fashioned restrictions of previous generations.

Of course not...
The article (and the researchers) don't want to talk about that...

Moreover, note the narrow parameters of the study...
Only about a third of sixth- and seventh-graders who completed an abstinence-focused program started having sex within the next two years, researchers found.
It's talking about VERY YOUNG teens delaying sex by two years...
THAT IS IT.

It doesn't talk about how they do AFTER that, and the high school years are the ones that you REALLY need to be concerned about...
In the United States, the 18 - 19 year-old age group has the highest rate of pregnancy followed by the 15 - 17 year-old age group.
BestSite: Statistics Teen PREGNANCY
It does not even come close to talking about the riskiest years for teen pregnancy...

"The findings are the first clear evidence that an abstinence program could work.

"I think we've written off abstinence-only education without looking closely at the nature of the evidence," said John B. Jemmott III, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania who led the federally funded study. "Our study shows this could be one approach that could be used."

The research, published in the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine, comes amid intense debate over how to reduce sexual activity, pregnancies, births and sexually transmitted diseases among children and teenagers. After falling for more than a decade, the numbers of births, pregnancies and STDs among U.S. teens have begun increasing. "

It is so utterly amazing how the left knee-jerks anything that might lead us to suggest to young people it is not in their best interest to engage in sexual activity during their teen years. That abstinence IS the best way to prevent getting pregnant or contracting an STD.

I swear they want them too and it is dumbfounding.

The best way to get kids to not get hooked on cigarettes is to teach them the dangers and drawbacks of smoking, which we do. If we applied the same logic, that telling them not to will encourage it, they are going to anyway so me may as well teach them how do it properly and safely.

They just can't stand it if someone wants to tell a kid, hey don't have sex young it can ruin your future life or at the least make it incrementally and measurably more difficult.

I smoked Marlboro Reds for a number of years - quitting was difficult and in fact is an ongoing project.

However, a (normal, at least) human's compulsion for sex is immeasureably stronger than the desire for nicotine. Also, there's no good way to smoke - there are good ways for sex (again, for normal folk, including deeply religious folk). Your comparison is completely goofy.

You need to pound into a kid's head that for a VARIETY of reasons sex before commitment(marriage is my personal belief) is unbenificial and hurtful. But you must be prepared for the kid who decides they want to have sex for sex's sake cause it's fun (which it is-there's no denying). Give them information about birth control.
This won't always prevent teen pregnancy as there are many reasons girls 'want' to get pregnant. Just depends on their personality. STDs should certainly be discussed by hmmm... age 11?
