Default Laurence M. Huey

Here is a story of someone who pursued their passion for science in spite of all obstacles.

Quote:
Laurence Markham Huey (18921963) was an American zoologist and the Curator of Birds and Mammals at the San Diego Natural History Museum from 1923 to 1961.[1] His main research field was the study of mammals and birds of California and Baja California. He also did field work on mammals and birds in Utah and Arizona, in particular at the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.
Huey's formal education ended at the 8th grade. Today he'd be instantly rejected for a lack of a college degree. Gotta pay off the college scam.

Quote:
Huey was born on 6 September 1892 in Tijuana River Valley, San Diego, California. Of humble origins (Huey left school at 8th grade), he worked in a planing mill at age 15 and began his self-education in natural history. At 16, he became a Junior Member of the San Diego Society of Natural History.
I can't help but wonder how much talent and achievement is wasted by society and employers insistence on a college degree for a person to be considered worthwhile.

To play the devil's advocate, many places say "Must have college degree OR commensurate experience"...

Interning, help-desk, or entry-level support is a great way of kickstarting a career...If your resume says no degree, but it DOES say something like "3 years experience in Help Desk; unix/linux environment, script writing and troubleshooting; junior programming", that can be more valuable than a piece of paper...Most places are willing to give you shot...

To be the curator of a zoo department requires extensive knowledge...I'm SURE this guy proved he had it long before he became the curator...

...and "yes"...That happens today...I have an 15-month Associate Degree from a computer school...My boss?...An 8-month diploma from a different computer school...

Many places use software to screen out anyone without a Bachelor's degree some insist on a particular major. Some personnel departments are incapable or unwilling to evaluate experience.

One of the nice things about the tight labor market in the Trump economy is that more employers will have to look at experience and ability in lieu of a degree.

yes,
Getting past H.R. and the software that reads your online application at larger companies is not easy.

Better shots at the real decision makers at smaller companies.
