CRISPR: The gene-editing tool revolutionizing biomedical research

A new tool could be the key to treating genetic diseases and may be the most consequential discovery in biomedicine this century

Editor's note: Since this story aired, viewers have asked about a new clinical trial that will use CRISPR to target certain cancers. More information can be found at this link: https://bit.ly/2I3w0kR and by contacting: PennCancerTrials@emergingmed.com

It's challenging to tell a story about something that's invisible to the naked eye and tricky to explain. But it's one we undertook, because rarely does a discovery come along that could revolutionize medicine. It's called CRISPR and it stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats. CRISPR sounds more like a refrigerator compartment than a gene-editing tool, but it's giving scientists power they could only imagine before - to easily edit DNA - allowing them to reprogram the genetic code of living things. That's opening up the possibility of curing genetic diseases. Some researchers are even using it to try to prevent disease entirely by correcting defective genes in human embryos. We wanted to see for ourselves, so we went to meet a scientist at the center of the CRISPR craze...
Potentially Curing genetically caused Blindness in living creatures. with 50% 70% Successful experiments done in rats and monkeys already.
Potentially being able to effect 6000+ known genetically based diseases.
Inexpensive, purchase the microscopic cells for $65 online from the bio-engineers creators lab web site.

Some researchers are even using it to try to prevent disease entirely by correcting defective genes in human embryos.
Yes experimenting on fertilized embryos. A crime IMO.
The bio-engineers warn,OBVIOUSLY IMO, that this work is dangerous. Why? Because we're still FAR to freaking ignorant about WHAT all the genes DO in relation to each other! Removing or changing 1 letter of the code in one gene portion has known and more unknown and cascading effects throughout the system. And once the gene is altered that human modification will be passed on for those people's family line for generations.

AND also of COURSE there's the social/political/bio SCI-FI horror of people attempting to create supermen and women, mutants and chimera.
