There's a guy in the cockpit, but he's just along for the ride.

In a first, Marines participating in an integrated training exercise at Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center 29 Palms, California, got supplies delivered via an autonomous UH-1 Huey in an experiment that offered a glimpse into the future of logistics operations....

That is a pretty good use of automation. If they can use automation to replace humans in dangerous situations, that seems like a plus to me.

2 edged sword.
Automated to kill, or deliver aid without question or accountability.

Either way, it may save the lives of those that would otherwise be tasked to perform such duties. I'm sure that in WWII if they could have remotely piloted the B-17's over Germany, it would have save thousands of American lives while still helping to defeat Nazi Germany. I would see that as a good thing.

Fact is, wars will still be fought with or without robots. Not having them in prior conflicts has not deterred nations from not going to war. I don't see that having robots will change that calculus much.

the calculus changes in several ways.
makes it easier to go to war .
the cost is not the LIVES of "our boys" so much as just the expense of robots.
the lives of those attacked are never cared about so the politicians have much easier sell for war.
IF they have to sell it at all. if folks simply ASSUME the president is "keeping us safe" by sending robots into foreign countries. Then who cares.

also changes the calculus in the sense that it's possible to create robots that are unidentifiable. That is to say that, attacks could be made and or war could be started with robots sent without the nation states named or by one country but labeled as others.

and of course there's just plain old hacking and hijacking the robots that are supposed be helping the troops. But they are turned against them or to help the enemy.

those are just 3 dark options among many.
A 4th, and hopefully least likely but the most disturbing version, is having U.S. officials that have robots used against U.S. citizens. Soldiers may decide to stand with the people, or disobey unconstitutional orders, while robots will obey without question whoever is at the controls.

the positives are there but the main reason for war is becasue people in power become/are corrupt. Robots give the corrupt more options not less.

I agree. However, evil dictators will be evil dictators no matter how much we wish otherwise. Sometimes war is the only option.

true
though I seriously doubt the need to war in most of the recent ones.

If your job can be replaced by a robot, I suggest that you learn how to repair or program robots.
