Default NASA seems lost in space, needs goal

From the little news I pick up on I to think NASA is biting off to much for it to chew.
They have so many missions and little money, direction or management, yet this is IMO. And like I sid I just read some of whats going on and use to post some of it.

Yet I wonder why they plan so much on Mars and instead have a goal to work deep space, sense they have launched several space telescopes just for that reason.

Where is NASA going? Expert panel says space agency isn't quite sure, needs clear goals
By Seth Borenstein, AP Science Writer | Associated Press 36 mins ago.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- NASA is adrift without a coherent vision for where it should be going, an independent panel of space, science and engineering experts said in a stinging report issued Wednesday.

The report by the National Academy of Sciences doesn't blame the space agency; it faults the president, Congress and the nation for not giving NASA clear direction. At the same time, it said NASA is doing little to further the White House's goal of sending astronauts to an asteroid.

Panel member Bob Crippen, a retired NASA manager and astronaut who piloted the first space shuttle mission, said he has never seen the space agency so adrift. He said that includes the decade between the end of the Apollo moon landings and the beginning of the shuttle program.

"I think people (at NASA) want to be focused a little more and know where they are going," Crippen told The Associated Press.

NASA spokesman David Weaver said in an emailed statement that the agency has clear and challenging goals. He listed several projects, including continued use of the International Space Station and efforts to develop a heavy-lift rocket and crew capsule capable of taking astronauts into deep space.

President Barack Obama in 2010 told the space agency to plan to send astronauts to an asteroid by 2025 as a training ground for an eventual Mars landing.

.............................................. SKIPPED SOME ...........................................

The report said NASA does not have enough money for its too many projects and has difficulty managing its 10 centers efficiently.

In his statement, NASA's Weaver said: "We're fully utilizing the International Space Station; developing a heavy-lift rocket and multi-purpose crew vehicle capable of taking American astronauts into deep space; facilitating development of commercial capabilities for cargo and crew transport to low Earth orbit; expanding our technological capabilities for the human and robotic missions of today and tomorrow; pursuing a robust portfolio of science missions such as the James Webb Space Telescope; developing faster and cleaner aircraft and inspiring the next generation of exploration leaders."

Smith said that statement itself shows the problem: "If it takes you that many phrases to explain it, then you do not have a crisp, clear strategic vision."

NASA needs to start marketing it's facilities to private enterprise and see if we can get people who know how to take full advantage of the resources we have in orbit actually getting there and making money at it. It will ONLY be when we can make money in space that we'll see long term successes there. The first company that figures out how to wrangle an iron ore asteroid into a safe orbit around Earth and use solar power to mine it will make more progress towards a permanent presence than anything else. The ISS has been limping along for years with few real successes to make it worthwhile.

On a lot of things close to our planet I would agree. And all they need to do is start with our Moon and the top 5" of dust that has Helium 3.

That alone would make more $ once we can produce power plants to process it.

And then there are asteroids which hold the heavy elements which are a bit further out.

Plus with outside people in side that would open up the amount of thinking & planning.

It also has the added benefit of getting people in the loop who work with the perspective of finding ways to exceed thier budget by finding ways to make things pay, instead of just finding ways to stretch what they have. The Russians touched on this a little when they sold those trips to space. Think of how much money could be saved/made if we designed a shuttle with 2-6 seats for working tourists - people who would be paying for the ride, but also helping out with some of the work.

I think NASA has to many connection to our Military so far and that means to many secrets, thats why they have not done what we are talking about yet.

And with our Military involvement means less goals for civilians and more for the Military.

In great economic times a mars mission appears to me a grand ideal, however...did I mention the economy...?

They were turning it around until Obama cancelled the Constellation program and left everything in complete disarray. It was a terrible decision.

Cuts were made as I understand it, and I agree that outer space travel should have had the least priority given the state of the nation.

NASA has this in their plans, why I don't know as the money, brain pwer and equipment involved could be used in their deep space plans. I guess they still do it by baby steps, one at a time.

If you miss the shuttle, then you liked it to. What do you like about the rover? It's ability to be cleaned by the dust storms? Or that it is still working?
