Default NASA Mars Rover Finds Mineral Vein Deposited by Water

This is a significant discovery and one we will be able to use to obtain a better understanding of the history of water on Mars.

Quote:
ScienceDaily (Dec. 7, 2011) — NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has found bright veins of a mineral, apparently gypsum, deposited by water. Analysis of the vein will help improve understanding of the history of wet environments on Mars.

I am very interested in this. From a layman's perspective. Like making breathable air for longer space flights. So we have hydrogen and oxygen if there's water somewhere out there. What are we missing? Nitrogen? Is there nitrogen on the moon?

There's actually water all over space. In fact, there's a super mega massive ocean if you will, right in the middle of space. It's 140 trillion times more than all the water on earth.

I would not go as far as to say water is "all over space." But yes, we have confirmed water to be in various reaches of space.

What you are referring to is actually a vapor cloud around a black hole around 10-12 billion light years away. Black holes suck in matter and eject it in the form of energy. Instead, this one appears to combine oxygen and hydrogen atoms and eject in the form of water.

Being so far away, means we are looking at something that is only a little over one billion or so years old, when the universe was very young.
