Default A gold watch for Ronald McDonald?

Chicago -- A coalition of health professionals, parents and corporate accountability advocates is calling for Ronald McDonald to retire as a spokesman for the nation's largest restaurant chain, saying he has too much influence on kids.

Corporate Accountability International, which has waged campaigns against bottled water and tobacco companies, said it plans to present the results of a survey Wednesday showing that most Americans agree.

The group will release the results at a lunchtime "retirement party" for Oak Brook, Ill.-based McDonald's chief happiness officer, a 50-year veteran of the company, at the McDonald's restaurant at Chicago Avenue and State Street in Chicago.

The organization -- which was also behind the effort to retire Joe Camel from Camel cigarettes -- is inviting Chicagoans to sign retirement cards for the mascot at the McDonald's.

Nearly two dozen similar events will be held at McDonald's restaurants and colleges across the country that day, according to Corporate Accountability International spokesman Nick Guroff.

A spokeswoman for McDonald's said the company wasn't invited to the party, but said Ronald's role as a brand ambassador hasn't changed.

It's to bring out the fun side of having meals with family and to promote an active lifestyle, she said.

"He is the heart and soul of Ronald McDonald House Charities, which lends a helping hand to families in their time of need," the company told the Chicago Tribune in a written statement.

I find this funny, because my kids did not know who he was. He may have had influence in the past, but it is much less than it used to be. We don't go to McDonald's very often anyways because as sensible parents, we know that their food is generally unhealthy. But Ronald had nothing to do with it. Jack in the Box and Burger King both sell the same high fat, calories and cholestrol food, but do you hear people calling for the King and jack to be retired? I haven't.

These people need to focus on something else. How about sports stars and entertainers who set bad examples for kids by their behaviors? They have much more influence than a clown in a commercial.

I believe in California animal rights wackos and vegetarians forced Burger King to put veggie burgers on the menu and Jack in the Box I thought closed for good when they poisoned a bunch of people with their food. I know they are no longer here in Southeast Michigan at least.

These stunts are meant to bring attention to the group of nuts that organize it rather than really making a difference in people's lives for the better.

Their study about tap water vs bottled water is laughable. Sure, people who use scented fabric softener and scented detergent and wear cologne or perfume aren't going to notice the smell of chlorine in the water--most of what people taste is actually the smell.

I can see them going after Joe Camel, but going after McDonald's--no, that has gotten silly---what's next, going after Cracker Jax, or every candy company that targets kids?
