Default Thoughts on the 2012 end of the world predictions.

Just wondering, what people's thoughts on 2012 are. End of the world, or just Y2K style hype?

What's going to get us? A comet/meteorite, nuclear holocaust, lack of electromagnetic shield to protect us from the solar winds, nothing, yellowstone supervolcano, God's wrath... or all of the above?

I think maybe the Mayans just had to much on their plate to extend the calendar beyond 2012, and then they got wiped out before they could resume.

Our electromagnetic field has survived previous polar reversals, so no reason to think it will fail with the upcoming one.

A meteor is a slim but real possibility.

Yellowstone supervolcano will not be the end of the world, but its unlikely I would survive it.

Like the day the universe started the end will be a big bang and we won't even know what hit us, nor will have time to care.

If 2012 is really the end of it all, my creditors are going to be really pissed!

That's what I'm talking about... no more student loans.

But the supervolcano will probably get me first.

Don't include me in your "we"... I voted for Ron Paul.

He's pretty cool, but he still couldn't deflect a meteor.

I think the difference between 20102 and Y2K is that Y2K depended on man-made creation upsetting the world balance, while there are scientifically verified alignments going on in 2012 that could have happened before. That gives it slightly more credence as far as I'm concerned.

I'm curious how they could have known about the galactic alignment and just what else they actually knew about what was gonna happen at that time. The concept of "Yod" influenced solar storm seems interesting.

Or..since humans have only really been keeping records for an eyeblink, and evidence exists for human population bottlenecks in our past, and several general mass extinctions, no telling what might be in store for us.

I don't see that the way our galaxy lines up as having any ability to influence anything here on earth, that's just astrological mumbo jumbo, like saying planetary alignments control who becomes emperor or something.

I do find it to be an odd coincident that the mayan calendar, nostrodamus' predictions, a projected near miss (hopefully) with a meteor, the Hadron collider and the possibility that it will create a black hole that devours earth, the earth's magnetic poles on the brink of reversal, the lava dome under the lake in Yellowstone growing, etc. etc. all seeming to occur or build up around the same time. The stars in the center of the universe are too distanct to have a gravitational impact on earth regardless of this "galactic alignment", which I think is just a coincidence.

How about the Taliban getting closer to having their fingers on the controls to Pakistan's nuclear weapons by the day?

A lot of things seem to be coming to a head at the same time. However, if we wake up on Dec. 22nd 2012 and nothing has changed, and further as the days and months go by into 2013... 2014 etc. unless the world does come to an end, it will all just seem like the same sort of hype that surrounded Y2K, regardless of what is manmade or not.

Time and the numeric system that distinguishes the years 2000 and 2012 are completely manmade constructs and have no real meaning except the ones we apply to them.

I think it is perfectly likely that there are always things building up, political, in the natural world, in deep space... some sort of alignment with another star or galaxy, some ancient civilizations calendar coming to an end, a near miss from a meteor or the potential for a tsunami or what have you. Somehow this mayan 2012 thing got a lot of attention and picked up speed like a runaway snowball, globbing on to things like the polar shift, the lack of sunspots, glaciers melting and everything else that is being attributed to it... but likely it will be as anti-climactical as Y2K

The Jehovah's Witnesses have predicted armageddon about 2 dozen times... of course, they've always been wrong, but there is always a new and updated prediction. Fortunately I'm no longer a part of that religion, but remember back, a day didn't go by that the church didn't preach some doom and gloom 2012ish type scenario that we were supposedly on the brink of destruction constantly, but nothing ever happened. I don't know for sure, but 2012 is probably their new "due date" for the apocalypse - it just seems to fit their line of thought.

I have a feeling 2012 will come and pass and be utterly uneventful.
