Default Why does television portray ministers this way?

I am still trying to figure out just why just why ministers are typically portrayed, on television shows, as being milquetoast.

Usually, stereotypes are based upon that which is typical--or, at the very least, frequent.

But it has not been my experience, at all, that it is typical (or even frequent) for ministers to be milquetoast.

At one end of the spectrum, there are the fundamentalists. (No, I am not one.) And these typically are fiery--and therefore, far from milquetoast.

But even those rather far removed from this end of the spectrum do not impress me as being milquetoast.

What do others think?

It's an issue I've noticed for decades.
As for fundamentalists ministers, they are often portrayed as controlling, mean, hypocritical, violent, psycho or all of that.

However there are notable exceptions.

But as to WHY the media portrays ministers like this.
IMO generally speaking I think it's for several reasons.
Mainly Hollywood has ... um ...an extreme distaste... for religion especially Christianity and Christians. always has. And they think Christianity is for the weak(or weak minded) and/or those fearful of the "the real world". And doesn't like to portray Christianity or those who believe it as strong much less heroic human beings.
Also it seems like few in Hollywood have much real experience with churches, and have little knowledge of Christianity. On the other hand some ran to Hollywood to "get away from" the "stifling rules" of home and Church to be "free". And they delight in dismissing, mocking and denigrating Christian ideas and people.

To the lesser degree the same trend goes for portrayals of fathers and Fatherhood.

see a pattern here?

But PJ here's a question for us to think about?
How did Jesus say his followers would be treated by the rest of world?
