World asked to help craft online charter for religious harmony

Quote:
A website launched Friday with the backing of technology industry and Hollywood elite urges people worldwide to help craft a framework for harmony between all religions.

The Charter for Compassion project on the Internet at Charter For Compassion :: home springs from a "wish" granted this year to religious scholar Karen Armstrong at a premier Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED) conference in California.

"Tedizens" include Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin along with other Internet icons as well as celebrities such as Forest Whittaker and Cameron Diaz.

Wishes granted at TED envision ways to better the world and come with a promise that Tedizens will lend their clout and capabilities to making them come true.

Armstrong's wish is to combine universal principles of respect and compassion into a charter based on a "golden rule" she believes is at the core of every major religion.

The Golden Rule essentially calls on people to do unto others as they would have done unto them.

"The chief task of our time is to build a global society where people of all persuasions can live together in peace and harmony," Armstrong said.

"If we do not achieve this, it seems unlikely that we will have a viable world to hand on to the next generation."

Charter for Compassion invites people from "all faiths, nationalities, languages and backgrounds" to help draft statements of principles and actions that should be taken.
This is such crap I decided to register and respond...(Wouldn't be surprised if whitewashed soon)...

This is a joke.

What you’re trying to do is place a floor on all religions that they start from the same level. This sounds great in the “Imagine” world of John Lennon, but unapplicable in reality.

Religions are NOT and should NOT be treated the same. Some have a large contigency that believe that they are commanded by their god to kill those who do not support them. This also includes politically and socially.

Only when the dregs are weeded out (instead of included) could this even come close to any realistic expectations.

This pie-in-the-sky project is so warped it will give extremists a membership into the global community since you’ve declared all religions viable and valid.

Have fun underminding your own intentions.

One of the past popes wanted to reach out to other religions.
Queen Elizabeth wanted to allow Muslims to hold ceremonies in an English(Anglican?) church.
Many people throughout the ages have recognized the potential for peace and understanding from interaction and exchanges between world religions.

That's a horrible interpretation...

It doesnt matter whether or not the mind is closed...It's what ACTIONS you do unto others that don't hold those same beliefs...

There a difference between someone who believes in their god and goes through each day honoring him through good deeds and someone who believes in their god and goes through each day cursing those that don't and plans or supports violence towards them...

I thought we were discussing a bridge that would allow world religious leaders and indirectly their flock to get along better with each other.

Quoting from the Koran or Bible or words of Confucius to limit that discussion is a defeatist attitude.
I was responding to that.

The point is we are mostly aware of the differences we have.
Conferences or discussions like those proposed are to look for similarities.
Love is one.
The golden rule is another. It has a respected position within the writings of many religious creeds. Confucius, Buddhism, and the Bible to name three.
Even within the Christian religion there are vast differences, but organizations exist that involve many different Christian faiths for the purpose of eliminating violence brought by bigotry, alms to the needy, things like that.

And you cannot honor your God if you go around paying homage to everyone else’s.

Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Your faith is of no effect if it isn’t sufficient enough to enable you to say that other faiths are wrong. If you don’t know beyond a shadow of a doubt that other faiths are wrong, you have no guarantee that yours is right.
