Post Judge Rules Against Christian Schools In UC Suit

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― A federal judge has ruled that the University of California did not discriminate against two Christian high schools in Southern California when it refused to honor some of their courses when considering students' eligibility for admission to UC campuses.

U.S. District Judge S. James Ortero rejected arguments from Calvary Chapel Christian School in Murrieta and Calvary Baptist School in La Verne that the university system rejected the courses because they were taught from a religious perspective.

In a written opinion issued Friday, the judge said the schools had failed to prove that religious intolerance, rather than academic merit, prompted UC not to count "Christianity and Morality in American Literature" and other courses toward admission.

"The decision to reject a course is constitutional as long as 1) UC did not reject the course because of animus and 2) UC had a rational basis for rejecting the course," said Ortero.

The ruling was Ortero's second in the case. In March, he issued an order validating the university's process for approving college preparatory classes and narrowing the lawsuit to six specific courses that did not meet the system's criteria.

Robert Tyler, a lawyer representing the schools, said Tuesday that he already has appealed the judge's most recent decision to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

"This case is about the future of private religious education," Tyler said.

I wonder if I could sue to have some of my science classes considered as "religion" for theology graduation.

I think the last statement is almost Freudian...
He talks about private RELIGIOUS education.
Science is not "religion".

Moreover, the implications of his statement are stupid.
If some religion decided not to teach math cause they felt it went against their religion, that wouldn't be the fault of mathematicians.
It's insulting for him to imply that "private religious education" is somehow tied to not teaching science.

If you fail in teaching your kids the REAL subjects, then quite frankly, according to capitalist standards, you should fail.

I don't know of a single school that doesn't set its own standards for acceptances.

are they "discriminating" against students based on faith? are you saying they won't accept Christian students?

or are you saying that the curriculum they are applying to the school with is not acceptable to their educational standards?

I believe we discriminate against people - not information.
