Default The Unbearable Whiteness Of Moses

Director and creepy alien enthusiast Ridley Scott has a new Moses epic coming out later this year: Exodus: Gods and Kings. The trailer for the upcoming film, which stars Christian Bale, hints that the movie has all the hallmarks of a truly enjoyable Scott flick: action, drama, and impossibly giant walls of water.
But as several critics have been quick to point out, the film does appear to have one glaring problem: Moses, Rhamses, and most of the starring cast are all white.

The debate over Hollywood’s tendency to cast white actors for biblical roles has emerged several times over the past few years, what with the History Channel’s lily-white Jesus in their The Bible series and Darren Aronofsky’s painfully-white (and inexplicably Australian) Noah. With each new example of Hollywood “whitewashing” the Bible, critics are quick articulate the multitude of reasons why white biblical figures are inherently ridiculous: given the region and time period in which biblical stories are set, figures such as Jesus, Noah, and Moses were almost assuredly not white; the Bible says little about the appearance of most of these biblical figures, except that Jesus was probably not much to look at, so forcing them to be white shows clear bias; by endorsing all-white depictions of the Bible, Christians are cheapening the power and reach of the biblical narrative; and really, at this point, even white people are just generally tired of seeing white people in movies (including this white male).

Really?...

the Bible says that?...

As for the subject, the author never gives thought to the director's primary goal....Getting the best actor for the part...

I'll agree to that...

But still...the only people bringing it up are people that still run their lives by racial identity...

Or "Stopping and Frisking" Blacks and Latinos in NY and elsewhere,
or demanding proof of citizenship in AZ based on race,
and those are just official instances.

concerning the film, and film depictions of various races in general.
personally I like to see Asians as Asian Characters in Asian based stories , natives Americans as native Americans , Nordics as Nordics, Africans as Africans, Eskimos as Eskimos.

If the characters race really isn't that important to the character or story then switches either way are fine/great make no difference.
But the wholesale switching of a historical cultures look?.
on one level, is just plain cheap here in the 21st century.

Mulan with an all white cast , or the story of Saint Patrick with an all black cast just should not be done,
except by low budget indy film, the local playhouse or kids theater/play/film.

And it's not ANTI white, or racially over sensitive, it's just more realistic.

a film with a multimillion dollar budget for AUTHENTIC costumes and computer special FX to make the environments look "REAL",
but all the characters racial characteristics are not? c'mon.

The film Prince of Egypt did a great version of the Exodus, and all the characters were brown (voiced by white and Jewish actors) . And if i remember there was no fuss or muss. I lest i didn't pick up on it. the story is the main thing , but it was refreshing to SEE more authentic depictions of ancient Egyptians and Jews and it would be again.

beautifully stylized film in general btw

It's acting - and with acting anyone can be anything. What do you want them to do, dye Bale's skin brown? Round up some Egyptian actors?
Personally I liked the movie with C. Heston. Why make a new one?

I like the Hestson version as well. My daughter hates that i can quote 3/4 of it.
But what's wrong with rounding up Egyptian or Middle Eastern actors for a new version?

Sure actors can play "anything" but even in sci-fi an actor that plays a Vulcan puts the ears on. Laurence Olivier played Othello and he wore dark make up because Othello is Black of course. he was trying to make it more authentic, correct? And as i said this is the 21st century and everything in films looks "real" and lilly white ancient Egyptians is not "real".

Is there an actors union that says the leads and cast must be ethnically euro in major historically based films, no matter what continent the stories are from?

IMO is a no brainier that brown actors should be the 1st choice here?
But computers COULD darken their skin BTW.

it's playing the "race card" to say that Egyptians should look... Egyptian in a film?
