Default Atheist Group Sues to Force Removal of Veterans' Peace Cross

Quote:
The Peace Cross, as it's known locally, commemorates the county's World War I dead. A plaque at the base of the 40-foot structure lists 39 names, and includes a quote from President Woodrow Wilson. There's no figure of Jesus, or religious imagery or text of any kind.

But to Edwords, who lives in nearby Greenbelt, it looked unmistakably like the Christian crosses of his Protestant youth, standing on a government-owned median strip at the intersection of Maryland Route 450 and Alternate U.S. 1.

"I thought, 'Well, that's odd. What's that doing there?'" he recalled. "That certainly gives the impression of government endorsement of religion. ... I just wondered how that kind of thing had continued."

Now Edwords wants to put an end to it -- with a lawsuit that is drawing national attention, from atheists and agnostics on one side and Christians and veterans on the other.

Idiots!!! The monument has been there almost a century and now they want it taken down. Stupid crap like this and the loss of family unity is killing this country. When you are this afraid of a monument, you need help.

I'm an atheist, and I think this is idiotic, but nothing new. The cross that stood for 40 years somewhere in California, also on government property, was taken down a year or so ago. The protesters would not even allow the sale of the property to a private group willing to take it on and maintain it.

Religion has taken the cross as one of its symbols, but the cross is not necessarily a religious symbol, and if it is, so what? I can deal with it, or close my eyes.

I wonder when it will be demanded that the crosses on the graves of fallen warriors at Arlington and elsewhere be taken down? They will have to get through a lot of vets, including me, for that.

As a vet I was also wondering about Arlington, and just who pays for the headstones. Turns out it's the VA, the government, and comes from taxpayer dollars. Here's bit of explanation about the crosses on the headstones...

From Headstones and Markers | Military.com

Headstones and Markers

Military.com

The Department of Veterans Affairs provides headstones and markers for the graves of veterans anywhere in the world and for eligible dependents of veterans buried in national, state veteran or federal cemeteries. Flat bronze, flat granite, flat marble and upright marble types are available to mark the grave of a veteran or dependent in the style consistent with existing monuments at the place of burial. Niche markers also are available to mark columbaria used for the inurnment of cremated remains.

Headstones and markers are inscribed with the name of the deceased, the years of birth and death, and branch of service. Optional items that also may be inscribed at VA expense are: military grade, rank or rate; war service (such as "World War II"); months and days of birth and death; an emblem reflecting one's beliefs; valor awards received; and the Purple Heart. Additional items may be inscribed at private expense.
As was said, they'll have to go through a lot of vets to get the crosses removed.

That particular case exampled more than most, the amplitude of the harmful intolerance of athist groups. In 1789, our new nation created a new perspective on the tolerance of free thought and religion. It is truely sad that the very document that brought forth this revolutionary idea is now used to reject it,...... By force of court and law.

We now have athiest Chaplains in the military. One wonders what moron created that oxymoron?

Atheism may or may not be a "religion" but it is a belief system. Atheists, as well as those of faith, need to stand together,,,, firm against this type of censorship.

I would suggest that recognition of a soldier's faith is not an endorsment of it. But then that is common sense excercising common decency. A quality of civility in which activist Atheist seemed to be lacking.

Why doesn't the atheist just put up his own memorial?
