Ya think?

Evangelicals say faith is now too political - Yahoo! News

Quote:
Conservative Christian leaders who believe the word "evangelical" has lost its religious meaning plan to release a starkly self-critical document saying the movement has become too political and has diminished the Gospel through its approach to the culture wars.

The statement, called "An Evangelical Manifesto," condemns Christians on the right and left for "using faith" to express political views without regard to the truth of the Bible, according to a draft of the document obtained Friday by The Associated Press.
Quote:
...faith loses its independence, Christians become `useful idiots' for one political party or another, and the Christian faith becomes an ideology," according to the draft.

...drafters say evangelicals have often expressed "truth without love," helping create a backlash against religion during a "generation of culture warring."
"All too often we have attacked the evils and injustices of others," they wrote, "while we have condoned our own sins." They argue, "we must reform our own behavior."

I've been saying the same thing for many years and it's good to see that some people have stepped into the light...

If they lose interest (faith)...then they likely were not followers of the Christ in the first place. If this thinking is adopted by the Church, it will gain back much of the respect it has given away in its quest for power in politics, in my opinion.

I would agree to an extent, but that's because the view is too black & white...

Religion didn't have as many factors PULLING people away from it as it did in the past...

Just like everything else in life, there's a competition to get people's attention, and religion has to compete with an ever growing amount of distractions...

Religion used to be PART of the common man's life...Now it's portrayed like a crutch only to be used in times of tragedy or when someone wants a change of life...Religion has to battle through that concept...Part of it is due to what it does, but a larger part has to do with other factors of life "getting in the way"...

This shift is mostly supported by our new generation of adult Christians as getting on with the real business of Christianity which is spelled out pretty plainly in the New Testament. It has some good backers in the powerful community of older ministers. But we will see if the other big players get on board. The article suggests it cannot be done without them, but what they fail to realize (and all older people miss till it hits them in the face) is that this bunch of thirty something and even now forty somethings work is dynamic due to the energy levels involved. Community outreach, missions, church building, and music ministries staffed by well educated, focused groups of creative minds.
The old power brokers in Evangelical Christianity just might be eating some dust soon if they don't quickly see the light.
