The more often you attend church services the happier you'll become, says survey

If you want to cheer yourself up, you could do a lot worse than attend church services, according to the findings of a recent poll.

A Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index found that people who attend a church, synagogue, or mosque frequently report experiencing more positive emotions and fewer negative ones in general than do those who attend less often or not at all.

Frequent churchgoers experience an average of 3.36 positive emotions per day compared with an average of 3.08 among those who never attend.

In other words, regular churchgoers seem to do better than non-churchgoers or occasional churchgoers in terms of their daily positive wellbeing experiences.

The U.S survey based its findings on more than 300,000 interviews.
The positive emotions include smiling and laughter, enjoyment, happiness, and learning or doing something interesting.

Negative emotions include worry, sadness, stress, and anger.
Not only do Americans who attend a church, synagogue, or mosque frequently report having higher wellbeing in general, but they also get an extra boost to their emotional state on Sundays - while the rest of the nation sees a decline in their mood.

The average number of positive emotions frequent churchgoers report experiencing rises to a high of 3.49 for the week on Sundays, whereas for those who attend church monthly or less often, the average number peaks on Saturdays and declines to a range of 3.14 to 3.29 on Sundays.
A similar pattern is evident for negative emotions.

Although reports of negative emotions decline on Saturdays for all the population in general, frequent churchgoers still report experiencing still fewer negative emotions on Sundays, while negativity increased on that day for those who attend church seldom or never.

Meanwhile, Sunday is the only day of the week when the moods of frequent churchgoers and those who do not attend a religious service often diverge in direction significantly.

Singing uplifting songs and listening to heartening music, being with people who smile a lot. Hearing a positive message. I can see that this might make you happier.

Plus being with like-minded people, hearing inspirational talks, feeling part of a community. It all adds-up.

I wish someone would show these stats to my Lutheran partner, my Baptist Mother and sister and my Methodist sister.

They are, in this order:
  1. Depresssed/drama queen
  2. Bitter old divorcee (Though, I admit, mellowing with age)
  3. Depressed
  4. Depressed/narcissistic
I, on the other hand, am a generally cheerful, occasionally obnoxiously playful member of the The Church of the Apathetic Agnostic.

Our motto is, "We don't know and we don't care." And we certainly don't get up early on Sunday mornings to gather together and collectively brood on the subject.

That's the key, perhaps.

They aren't "like minded people" to me and what they say is anything but inspirational, and it's not a community I have any desire to be a part of. So, in my experience, going to church significantly reduces my happiness and annoys the crap out of me.

I can well see how you yourself would not be made happier by regularly attending a church. I have found a contentment with people I know who regularly attend a church or synagogue. It is something that is quite evident.

Well said. There are different denominations, degrees of observance, etc. I found the right one for me. I have made good friends and have support from them too.

Like I I tell my family who are not all that churchy. If you have a crises in your life you want all the support systems you can garner. That is why al-anon was started. The alcoholic had this great support system and none for the family of said alcoholic.
Also churches often offer free counseling and assistance to members in times of need.
Even if you never require help just the feeling of helping others does a world of healing to the self.
So here is a support group already formed and in place ; why not take advantage of it if you are so inclined?
Lady told me once (about attending vs not) you might be able to swim across a channel on your own but would you really turn down the offer from a row boat full of people to hop aboard? After all you are all heading in the same direction.
