These are directives to followers of the faith. Churches have to do a little muck raking from time to time. I applaud the Pope for taking a stance.
Of course I don't agree that you have to make a confession with any witnesses but God himself to get to heaven. Or else Jesus Christ would not have had to die.
And the sins of the ten commandments are equal except for two, not seven: blaspheming God and murder (abortion qualifies).

I had to trade laptops with my husband for awhile (long story) and I don't have my bible on this one or I would be happy to discuss this further. But without proper scripture I would not want to argue a biblical point. I did search an online version, but couldn't find what I was looking for.
Thank you, though. I hadn't read any passages in a couple of days (hussle-bussle).
Reading the ones I did has helped me have more serenity.
Isn't it great He's always watching ?

There are a lot of so called "interpretations" of this verse but I believe it can stand on it's own merit. Of course Catholics and Protestants have differing viewpoints on this and many other interpretations, that's what makes them Catholics and Protestants! My rule of thumb when "attempting" to interpret scripture is that I prefer to let the obvois stand on it's own. This is not a complicated verse,it's pretty straight forward.I have always believed that they who seek to make a verse more complex have an agenda. This could well be true of Catholics as well. In America,we have over 400 Christian denominations who all claim to have the answer. Now we know that they all cannot be correct because their beliefs often conflict with each other. The bottom line is what we personally believe. I respect all Christian denominations,if I differ with them,I simply don't go to their services.

"I know my sheep and my sheep know me"...that is all I really need to know, our hope is in the name of the Lord and the guidance he gives to each of us. I try to be open to the Spirit and I trust that when I'm in error,God will understand that I love him and that I have sought the truth with an open mind and a contrite spirit. The early church was simply called The Way..it is my prayer that one day all Christians will come full circle and return to The Way.God cannot be happy with this division among Christians nor am I happy with it. But it is what it is and I have hope of a better tomorrow.

And even the early church had different viewpoints. The followers of Paul and the followers of Peter. The Greeks did not adhere to the same cleanliness practices from Jewish law (because they weren't Jewish). I believe Paul was quoting Jesus when He said "It's not what a man puts into his mouth that makes him holy, but what comes out of it."
Two different ways of looking at the same thing. I am inclined to believe God likes diversity or else he wouldn't have put the giraffe and the platypus in the same species!

Littering Not New "Deadly Sin," Bishops Clarify

Quote:
Reports that the Vatican has published a new list of the seven deadly sins of modern times that includes littering and economic inequality is simply not true, affirmed the episcopal conference of England and Wales.

The conference released a statement today clarifying that an interview published Sunday by L'Osservatore Romano with Bishop Gianfranco Girotti, regent of the tribunal of he Apostolic Penitentiary, was misinterpreted in the media as an official Vatican update to the seven deadly sins, laid out by Pope Gregory the Great in the sixth century.

"The Vatican has not published a new list of seven deadly sins; this is not a new Vatican edict," said the conference. "The story originated from an interview that Bishop Gianfranco Girotti gave to the L'Osservatore Romano in which he was questioned about new forms of social sins in this age of globalization."

The Vatican newspaper interviewed the bishop at the conclusion of a course that took place last week on the "internal forum" -- questions of conscience -- organized by the tribunal of the Apostolic Penitentiary to strengthen the training of priests in administering the sacrament of confession.

In the interview titled "Le Nuove Forme del Peccato Sociale" (The New Forms of Social Sin), journalist Nicola Gori asked the prelate what he thought are the new sins of the modern era.
Looks like some people took the interview as "an official statement" and ran with it...
