JERUSALEM (AFP) - High on Mount Sinai, Moses was on psychedelic drugs when he heard God deliver the Ten Commandments, an Israeli researcher claimed in a study published this week.
Such mind-altering substances formed an integral part of the religious rites of Israelites in biblical times, Benny Shanon, a professor of cognitive psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem wrote in the Time and Mind journal of philosophy. "As far Moses on Mount Sinai is concerned, it was either a supernatural cosmic event, which I don't believe, or a legend, which I don't believe either, or finally, and this is very probable, an event that joined Moses and the people of Israel under the effect of narcotics," Shanon told Israeli public radio on Tuesday. He's mixing up Mount Sinai and Aspen again...
![]() He further mentions that right after getting high, Moses declared himself "The Lizard King", then played the Star Spangled Banner on electric guitar...

I am curious what the basis for such a conclusion truly was.
If it is blind speculation (like I suspect), then it should be stated as such and the caveat "researcher says" should not be included in the article. Quote:
Rocky Mountain High! Colorado! (I always wondered about how the hell John Denver generated any popularity. Maybe THAT is the reason...) Quote:
The Old Testament includes EXPLICIT directives to STONE people for blasphemy. Also, there are MULTIPLE examples of the Hebrew God ordering whole NATIONS killed because they worshipped another "G-d". Doesn't the bible include an example of Moses KILLING people who were worshipping a false god after he came back down from the mountain after getting the ten commandments???? (And if he had used Kinko's, he wouldn't have had to make a return trip back up the mountain for another copy...) With that said, it WAS thousands of years ago, and the religion HAS developed away from those barbaric roots. There was enough barbarism to go around at that stage in history. But to blindly attribute his "life" to following what you quote your god saying in one spot (do not kill) is definitely not the full picture... Last edited by foundit66; 03-06-2008 at 06:17 PM. |

Exd 20:13 Thou shalt not kill.
Deu 5:17 Thou shalt not kill. Mat 5:21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: Rom 13:9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if [there be] any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Sounds like it specifies KILLING and not "murder". So let's refrain from trying to rewrite the bible, m'kay? And as for blasphemy, the "researcher" is saying that the self-described "word of god" is nothing more than a drug high. He is refuting the very word of god itself. He is showing "irreverence toward something considered sacred or inviolable". The TEN COMMANDMENTS themselves. If that's not blasphemy, what else could be? |
