Poll Confirms Parents’ Influence on Teens’ Religious Activities

Quote:
New York – February 28, 2008 – When it comes to attending church, praying and reading the Bible, the apple does not fall far from the tree. A recent poll of teens and their parents overwhelmingly confirms that parents have the most influence on their children’s religious activity.

A survey — the first to examine teens’ and their parents’ views of the Bible — commissioned by the American Bible Society and conducted by Weekly Reader Research, found that almost 80 percent of America’s 30.2 million 12-18 year olds think the Bible is important and 87 percent of parents think the Bible is important. However, the results show that parents still have work to do. Of the 47 percent of teens who think the Bible is very important, only 11 percent read the Bible daily.

Ten percent of America’s 12-18 year-olds participate in daily Bible reading, a higher level then reported in a June 2006 survey done by the Bible Society. In that measurement, six percent of teens said they read the Bible daily. A third of teens attend weekly worship services and more than 80 percent believe their prayers are answered some or all the time.

Children mirror their parents’ behavior. Parents who attend church weekly tend to have teens who worship weekly, while 78 percent of parents who never attend worship services have teens who never attend. The same correlation applies to Bible reading and prayer habits. Parents who responded positively to the question of whether it is important to raise children with religious or spiritual values had children who were significantly involved with faith.
I kind of figured this was an obvious fact...

Although both parents and their children show signs of not practicing what they read on an everyday level...Saying you think the bible is important is one thing...leaving the interview to go do drugs, have sex, and being basic morons is quite another...

My parents successfully drove me away from religion...

they taught me to think for myself and then got pissed that I decided that I disagreed with most organized religions of the world...

Train up a child in the way he should go,
Even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

My parents also drove me away from religion.

They tried the brute force Catholicism approach: guilt, fear, hellfire and damnation.

It worked on a few of my older siblings, but they were really confused and disappointed when it didn't work on me.

My father was raised Catholic. My mother's mother was too, but divorced her first husband and married a Baptist!
My cousin took me to a Jewish synagouge (I had no idea what was going on; everything was in Hebrew), then I visited a Mormon meeting. Mostly I attended a fire and brimstone church that still is in existance today.
My great aunt taught me all the Catholic prayers and I attended some Catholic school and some public.
But I had a good friend (a former Catholic)who told me a great truth. It is found in John 3:17. (not talking about 16, but 17).
Quote:
Jesus did not come into the world to condemn it but that through him it might be saved.
Also I like to read Greek phylosophy. And the Greeks proved through phylosophy many years ago that there was a creator. They also talked about there being a copy of every heavenly thing here on earth. And a "door" that was needed to bridge the earthly to the heavenly. After careful consideration, I believe Jesus Christ is that door.
I also believe as I was taught in catechism that a heathen is baptised in his own blood if he has never heard the word of God.
I have read a lot about the Egyptians and Witch craft, etc., but I think Christianity is the correct form of religion.
To each his own and bless you!
