Naked truth: It’s offensive

A provocative magazine ad that shows a group of entranced Catholic nuns sketching a naked man triggered waves of outrage from members of the Catholic community yesterday.

“It is in very poor taste,” said Sister Michelle Anne, a Carmelite nun and admissions coordinator at the Marian Manor nursing home in South Boston, about an Equinox Fitness Club advertisement in the latest issue of Boston magazine.

The ad depicts heavily made-up nuns, in habits, sketching a physically fit man, shown from behind. One of the lustful-looking sisters is depicted with her habit hitched up.

No one in our community would ever be involved with something like that,” Sister Michelle Anne said. “It’s very upsetting.”

The Catholic League, the Archdiocese of Boston and the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts all blasted the ad yesterday.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue called it “patently stupid,” while C.J. Doyle of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts said it “portrays a callous contempt for the sensibility of Catholics.”

Equinox defended the ad yesterday.

“Our ad campaigns are based on personal motivation and fantasy and throughout history the body has been considered a form of art,” Judy Taylor, a spokeswoman for Equinox Fitness Clubs, said in a written statement.

The only Equinox gym in Boston is located in the Back Bay, but the company has other gyms in major U.S. cities including New York, Chicago and San Francisco.

Donohue, whose group is the largest Catholic civil rights organization, also blasted Fallon Worldwide, the Minnesota firm that created the ad.

He pointed out that about 20 years ago, several major U.S. corporations stopped doing business with a predecessor firm - then known as Fallon McElligot - after senior officials were accused of racist and sexist behavior. The firm lost $22 million in accounts.

Boston magazine Publisher Dan Scully said the image is no more provocative than everyday images on commercial television.

“There’s nothing in there that we don’t think should be on the coffee table,” he said.

Bostonians in Catholic neighborhoods disagreed.

“Disgusting,” said Richie Davis of South Boston, referring to the ad.

“Disgraceful,” added Peggy Cosetta, another South Boston resident.
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...equinox_ad.jpg I'll link instead of forcing it on anyone...

This ad could've been done without the nuns...It's not overt, and I wouldn't go as far as "disgusting" or "disgraceful, but I do see this as another example where Christianity can be offended with impunity...People won't die and embassies won't be burned because Christian leaders will tell the masses to do so at the weekly gathering...

I also suspect the makers won't be doing any burqa-related ads anytime soon...

As a Catholic I find this marginally offensive, not the nude but the idea that nuns are forced to live a life of deprivation. It is a life that they have chosen.Yes,some may be offended by this ad but there will be no call to arms.

There are a couple of things which point to this ad not being as innocent as it appears...

The nun on the left showing her garter belt...The hands pressed up against the door by the nun outside with that "I gotta get me some of that" appearance...The nun are attractive and wearing makup...The two on the right look like their staring at the guy's privates...

Subtle, but intentional...

Catholic churches don't have paintings of nude people, anywhere?

I'm really not sure that the nude is the "only" issue here. It's not an issue for me in this ad. It's the idea that the nuns are "forced" to deprive themselves of sexual pleasure, they do this willingly!

I'm more concerned with the thrust or intent of the ad. Also..like other faiths,I do not believe the RCC will issue a call to arms...

I dunno. I don't really see where the offensiveness is, in my opinion. I look at the ad, and what goes through my mind is a scene from History of the World, Part One...The Inquisition skit. And Mel Brooks yelling "Send in the nuns!"
