Shouldn't there have actually been a consensus between the apostles in order to give any credence whatsoever to the notion of the "trinity?"

The nicene council was nothing more than a bunch of politicians perverting religion and the New Testament to fit their political needs (at the time there was virtually no separation of church and state). Why any "christian" would believe in something as ridiculous as the trinity is beyond me.

I happen to agree with the JWs, not because it was crammed down my throat for 10 years (for me that is ONLY reason to reject it), but because it is the only interpretation that makes sense and doesn't rely on some contradictory mysticism or political maneuvering.

Not that I'm much of a "believer" anyway, but if believing the trinity is a requirement to being christian, than I'd rather be a mormon or a muslim.

However, I think I can use my own brain with regard to the message in the new testament, and be as "christian" as I need to be without some holier-than-thou pope or council of dead bishops with a political agenda telling me who to interpret what I read.
Quote:
Jesus is God

Divine Messiah predicted in the Old Testament
Isaiah 7:14: “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”1

“Immanuel” literally means: “God with us.” See also Matthew 1:23; Jesus was “God with us.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This Messiah would be born a human son, but have a higher nature
Isaiah 9:6: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
This was a radical statement coming from a monotheistic Jewish prophet -- especially calling a human being “Mighty God”; but one that God fulfilled centuries later in Christ.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A couple hundred years later, but still more than half a millennium before Jesus walked the earth, more was predicted about the Messiah’s divine nature
Daniel 7:13-14: “There before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven . . . He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.”

“Son of Man” was the primary title Jesus used for Himself -- and this passage shows that this was a clear and strong claim of deity. And in Mark, the earliest of the four Gospels, He also included the unmistakable phrase, “coming on the clouds of heaven” and applied it to Himself (Mark 14:62). His listeners got the point, refused to believe it, and added it to their reasons to try to kill Him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The baby Jesus worshiped by the Magi
Matthew 2:11: “On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.”
Along with being led to the site where Jesus was born, these Magi were apparently informed by God about Jesus’ divine identity, and so they responded appropriately by worshiping Him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Jesus accepted worship from His disciples
Matthew 14:32-33: “And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God.’”

In a Jewish culture, only the one true God can be worshiped; their actions show that they acknowledged Jesus as being divine. And Jesus didn’t correct them or say, “Don’t you realize that I’m just a mortal prophet? Stop worshiping me!” Rather, He accepted their worship, knowing He really was God in human flesh.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jesus’ claim about Himself
John 8:58-59: "‘I tell you the truth,’ Jesus answered, ‘before Abraham was born, I am!’ At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.”
This is a powerful double claim from Jesus: first, that He pre-existed His human birth and was actually alive and present (as God) before Abraham; second, that His title was “I am” -- which was the same title used for Jehovah God in Exodus 3:14. His listeners again got the point, and picked up stones to execute Him!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Another of Jesus’ claims of deity
John 10:30-33: “‘I and the Father are one.’ Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus said to them, ‘I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?’ ‘We are not stoning you for any of these,’ replied the Jews, ‘but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.’”

It couldn’t be clearer than it is here: Jesus’ highly educated listeners understood His claim of deity. They only had two possible responses: to humble themselves and bow before Him as the Magi and the disciples had done earlier, or reject His claim and judge Him as a blasphemer. Unfortunately they chose the latter option. But notice that Jesus doesn’t argue with their accusation, because it was accurate. He really was claiming to be God!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thomas’ response to the resurrected Jesus
John 20:27-29: “Then He said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.’ Thomas said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’"
This disciple realized, because of Jesus’ resurrection, who Jesus really was -- and humbly worshiped Him and declared His true identity: “My Lord and my God!” Jesus not only accepts this declaration, but blesses all of the disciples -- and all of us today -- who come to the same realization and place of humble worship.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Jesus accepted worship prior to His ascension
Matthew 28:16-17: “Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.”

Note that Jesus was worshiped at His birth, throughout His ministry, after His resurrection, and again here -- right before His physical ascension into heaven. His divine nature, as a member of the Godhead (along with the Father and the Holy Spirit), was never questioned by Him or by those who really knew who He was and followed Him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Paul’s understanding as an apostle and leader of the church
Colossians 1:15-16; 2:9: “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. . . . For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form. . .”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

And in Titus 2:13-14 Paul refers to him as “our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us. . .”

Paul’s letters were some of the earliest Christian writings, with most of them actually pre-dating the four Gospels -- yet they make some of the strongest statements concerning the first church’s clear understanding of Jesus as the Creator; God in human form.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jesus will be worshiped by every creature in heaven Revelation 5:13-14: “Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: ‘To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!’ The four living creatures said, ‘Amen,’ and the elders fell down and worshiped.”
The last book in the Bible points prophetically to the time where every living creature will know and acknowledge that Jesus, the “Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29) is also the God who we must praise, honor, and worship -- and certainly was not a mere mortal whose identity needed upgrading by Constantine (Roman emperor) hundreds of years after He walked this planet!
Bible Verses Stating Jesus is God
And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. Luke 7:16
Once, a paralytic man was presented before Jesus for healing (Luke 5:17-26), and Jesus said, “Man, thy sins are forgiven thee” (Luke 5:20). And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? (Luke 5:21). But Jesus (God in flesh) knew their thoughts and queried,
But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. (Luke 5:22-24)
All through the Bible, Jesus (the Messiah) is set as being equal to God. So, yeah, you're mistaken. in fact, you're so badly mistaken that I strongly doubt that you've put any effort to seeking out the truth yourself and are relying on simply parroting what you've been told.
Being equal to god is not the same as being god.
The funny thing about JWs, is the lack of consistency in the religion. They claim to be a very consistent religion transcending culture, race, geographic location etc. But that is bull****. Their dogma varies from Kindom Hall to kingdom hall, from town to town, from region to region.
When I was in the witnesses, it was an ABSOLUTE NO-NO to join the military. But I know of some JWs in some regions that are totally pro military. Some believe that organized sports are wrong, and teach that from the podium (that is what I was taught). Others actually coach organized sports. Some teach that smurfs are satanic symbols and tell parents to burn their smurf toys, pajamas, etc. (like mine did under the direction of the "elders"). Others know nothing about smurfs being "satanic."
The JW religion is BULL****!
I studied w/ them for a bit, several of them actually but I never knocked on any doors or did the speech things they do like giving a sermon……
I did not experience any of those regional differences & that is actually knew to me… The ones I know are very strict, legalistic & are quick to X-communicate……
Many often drank a lot to………… The emphasis was always on works, attending meetings & toting the line…………. I was able to question & probe, the others were intimidated by the elders around & kept their mouths shut……….
They never wanted to discuss the history of the organization eventhough they had pictures of the judge & some others in the back of the hall….. I think even Russell…..
See the Kindom Halls I attended were very strictly against any kind of wall adornments, no pictures of Russell or the judge (?) or anything like that.
And drinking was not forbidden, but frowned upon, and most were tea totalers, big time. It was OK to drink in non-intoxicating amounts, but most of the JWs I knew didn't touch alcohol at all, and those that did - never more than 1 - 2 drinks in a single day if even that much.
This concept meant nothing to Jews- and Jesus was a Jew throughout his physical life.
The fact that Jesus was born into a Jewish family does not automatically vitiate the assertion that He was a part of the godhead (or "Trinity").
Certainly, Paul, as the apostle to the Gentiles, was careful not to do anything that might offend his Christian brethren of Jewish heritage (many of whom believed that the Mosaic Law was still in effect, including its dietary codes).
But I do not believe that Paul is ever in conflict with Jesus over doctrinal matters (or in conflict with James either--who is often cited as being, supposedly, Paul's antithesis, in matters of faith versus works).
Christians believe that the selection of the canonical books of the New Testament was guided by the Holy Spirit.
In any case, the so-called "Gospel of Thomas" and other apocraphyl works are clearly not due a place in the canon of inspired scripture.
There is certainly a strong dualism that runs throughout the Book of Revelation (or the Apocalypse, as it is typically titled in Catholic Bibles). But I see nothing especially gnostic in this.
For one thing, I do not view it as some abstruse blueprint for future history that Christians were expected to follow. So the esoteric element of special knowledge (so fundamental to gnostic theory) is just not there, it seems to me.
And neither is the gnostic view that the Earth represents a deeply flawed world--perhaps a world created by an inferior god.
I think it important to note that is not in the koran or Christian teachings but that never stopped some in both groups from practicing that.........
Example that:
In Islam you have jihad & there is no similar concept in Christianity & yet they managed to stir up enough folks to launch the crusades........
Study up on history the Crusades was a response to the expansionist nature of Islam.
I always knew what you believe FS. You believe the Bible is the inerrant word of God. Right?
You may even believe the Bishop Usher's timetable of creation, even though he was a very minor Episcopal priest in the 18th century, wasn't he? Do you believe in the Rapture? Those are both examples of stuff that never were in the Bible.
I do not accept the Isaiah prophecy, because
Quote:
and the government will be on his shoulders.
doesn't apply. It never happened. There are alternate explanations the other predictions, too. You must take them in their own cultural context and place and time, not to mention in the context of the words before and after each one.
Paul started orchestrating his version of the Bible and the coming NT after Jesus left the earth. The historicity of the Magi, the Virgin birth, and other episodes don't hold up under examination. They are always considered the mythic realm of the Greeks. The real John, brother of Jesus, was in a battle with Paul over the fact that Jesus was a Jew and practiced Judaism his whole life. Paul won through political maneuvering and discredited The Rabbi of the Jerusalem conclave. Many scholars and linguists think the gospels are all Pauline documents or doctored by Paulinists. I think most credit Jesus with the Sermon on the Mount and the Lord's Prayer. They are the heart of Jesus' teaching as we have received it. Yet veritably no one follows the words in either. I think it was Hillel who was first quoted with a form of the Golden Rule, but Jesus certainly espoused it. He also mentioned love thy brother as thyself and recommended if a man was without a coat, he should be given one. He is also probably the author of the Good Samaritan story and other parables.
So much of the Christianity I see today is spoiled by theological squabbles and by denouncing others. You hardly ever ever see anyone sticking to Jesus' main teachings and not falling prey to cursing people to hell for minor things, let alone major ones.
You don't believe the world is flawed? I just saw that view of Gnosticsm mentioned in Wikipedia, but I rejected it because it is not the big picture of Gnosticism. The Gnostic metaphor is that good and evil, light and dark, were pitted against each other and someday an apocolypse will happen when in an epic battle Good wins, Evil is virtually eliminated, leaving God in Charge of what's left. Until then the world is tainted by evil and thus flawed.
It was a very black and white religion. No shades of gray, no ambiguity. Ancient gnostics often believed the world was not "real" but that all life was spiritual. The earth is flawed because it is not "real", but an illusion. This harks to the Hindu concept of the Maya but was developed in a different direction by Manichean beliefs. At some point, Gnostics became people that believed the Gnosis was knowing God directly without the help of a priesthood intervening. That was the basic issue the Old Church wanted to kill. That was the political part. They wanted the Power over believers. God forbid, they should turn directly to God!
