Default How the Trump-Kim Summit Failed: Big Threats, Big Egos, Bad Bets

Quote:
But Mr. Trump’s offer was essentially the same deal that the United States has pushed — and the North has rejected — for a quarter century. Intelligence agencies had warned him, publicly, Mr. Kim would not be willing to give up the arsenal completely. North Korea itself had said repeatedly that it would only move gradually.

Several of Mr. Trump’s own aides, led by national security adviser John R. Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, thought the chances of a grand bargain for total nuclear disarmament were virtually zero. Some questioned whether the summit meeting should go forward.

Mr. Trump disagreed. He had taken to showing what he called Mr. Kim’s “beautiful letters” to visitors to the Oval Office, as evidence he had built a rapport with one of the world’s most brutal dictators. While some in the White House worried Mr. Trump was being played, the president seemed entranced — even declaring “we fell in love.”

sad part is he might do some really good things perhaps great things if he wasn't such a showman, such a narcissist.

Those two things aren't contradictory.

And it was even worse nothing, South Korea cancelled their war games with us, and Trump told everyone he believed Kim Jong Un when he told him that he had nothing to do with the torture and death of American prisoner Otto Warmbier.

He sure does love validating dictators.

He can't, he's too invested in Trump to turn back. Basically sunk cost fallacy.

You're sure right about Trump validating dictators, he

Tried to secretly tell Putin he'd be more flexible with him after mocking concerns over Russia as the foreign policy of the 1980's.

Creating a so-called agreement with a leading sponsor of terrorism and maniacal theocracy with an official policy of death to America rewarding them with sanctions relief and midnight flights loaded with billions in cash.

Made nice with the brutal Cuban regime even attending a baseball game in country as an honored guest of the Castro brothers who routinely hand out 20 year prison sentences to critics of the regime. This after lifting US sanctions with a sweetheart deal that requires the Cuban government be paid in foreign currency while they pay Cubans in national currency.

Those are just the three most prominent examples of the President coddling foreign dictators. There are other embarrassing moments like when he gushed with joy over a book given to him by Venezuelan strong man and Cuban ally Hugo Chavez blissfully unaware that it contained an unrelenting diatribe against the US.

But wait, that was Nobel peace prize winner Obama not Trump. But, but engaging in talks with dictators while maintaining a firm set of American principles is validating them while prostrating US foreign policy to coddle them is the genuine pursuit of peace worthy of a Nobel prize.

goll dang it I'm tired of people believing returning a few remains from the Korean war means something when the leader of NK has nukes. yeah it was a gesture in a way but for trump to make out like there were hoards of parents who are still alive and grieving is silly. Most of the very youngest Korean war vets -those who lied about their age and were 14 or 15 when they went in are almost 80. And the ones who died as prisoners or were shot at that age had no kids!! And if they went in at the normal age of 18 or 20 there is but a very remote few offspring and most of them would be illegitimate and probably don't even know their father died in that war. So stop

He has a new rocket according to intel. Or one we didn't know about.
What about the man who died while in Kim's care...Trump takes up for Kim saying it wasn't his fault till he's criticized for it.

The thing Trump does is lie a lot. He doesn't do it well because too many can see through it. Just good enough for his base.
