Obama authorizes secret U.S. support for Syrian rebels

President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing U.S. support for rebels seeking to depose Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government, U.S. sources familiar with the matter said.

Obama's order, approved earlier this year and known as an intelligence "finding," broadly permits the CIA and other U.S. agencies to provide support that could help the rebels oust Assad.

This and other developments signal a shift toward growing, albeit still circumscribed, support for Assad's armed opponents - a shift that intensified following last month's failure of the U.N. Security Council to agree on tougher sanctions against the Damascus government.

The White House is for now apparently stopping short of giving the rebels lethal weapons, even as some U.S. allies do just that.

But U.S. and European officials have said that there have been noticeable improvements in the coherence and effectiveness of Syrian rebel groups in the past few weeks. That represents a significant change in assessments of the rebels by Western officials, who previously characterized Assad's opponents as a disorganized, almost chaotic, rabble.

Precisely when Obama signed the secret intelligence authorization, an action not previously reported, could not be determined.

The full extent of clandestine support that agencies like the CIA might be providing also is unclear.

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor declined comment.
How do you know when something a "secret" in the Obama administration?...

I think what the obama is doing with state secrets is boarding on treason. He knows who is leaking and why they are doing it, yet he does nothing to stop it.

If I were Romney I would make a statement stating as much too.

As long as obama is in office, no country will trust him with top secret information. But, the terrorists will love 'em.

MSM reports it, but doesn't question how the information was obtained. I guess as long as they keep getting fed the scoops, the fact that these leaks are hurting our national security means nothing. Blatant political pandering with no consequences. A horrible example to set.

I agree. I'd also like to know what the people in Congress are doing about it, besides playing Switch Thumbs, or worse, Cyclical Reflexive Motion.

Wow, you guys take some good news and the first thing you do is find a way to spin it in a bad light. I think it is good to let it be known. Why? Because it could end the violence earlier. If Assad understands the rebels are getting help he may realize it's time to quit. It may make the Russians think they would be better changing to a supoportive stance. Letting this news out could be strategic not partisan. Sometimes you guys can't think past your own hatred.

Who knows but what would you have us do. Assad will be leaving. If we are seen by those who take over as being helpful it might be to our benifit. Maybe not but there is a chance. McCain has been blowing chunks saying we should be involved.
