W.H. withdraws ambassador nominee after reported drunken driving charge

The White House announced on Thursday that it was withdrawing its nominee for ambassador to the Netherlands, Timothy M. Broas, but did not say why.
On Friday, the Center for Public Integrity reported that Broas -- a top fundraiser for the Obama campaign -- was pulled over by police in Maryland earlier this month and charged with drunken driving and resisting arrest.
Broas is an attorney in Washington and is listed on records released by the campaign as a bundler who has raised more than $500,000 so far for the president's reelection. From the Center for Public Integrity report:

Broas “withdrew his nomination for personal reasons,” said Debra Reed, a spokeswoman. “That’s the extent of what we’ll say about that.”
She added that Broas believed that the charges he faced would “be resolved under the transportation code.” A trial date has been set in Rockville, Md., for August 6.
White House spokesman Eric Schultz echoed that Broas withdrew his nomination “for personal reasons” but declined to comment further.
