White House congratulates Egypt's Morsi

Quote:
The White House congratulated Egypt's president-elect Mohamed Morsi on his victory in that country's presidential election, calling it a "milestone" in the country's transition to democracy.

President Obama called Morsi Sunday evening, telling him that the United States would stand by Egypt in its transitional period — and said that he looked forward to working together.

"We look forward to working together with President-elect Morsi and the government he forms, on the basis of mutual respect, to advance the many shared interests between Egypt and the United States," press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement.
And here's the guy who Obama congratulates...

Egypt presidential candidate seeks Constitution based on Sharia Law

Egypt’s Constitution should be based on the Koran and Sharia law, presidential candidate from the Muslim Brotherhood Islamist movement Mohamed Morsi said.

“The Koran is our constitution, the Prophet is our leader, jihad is our path and death in the name of Allah is our goal,” Morsi said in his election speech before Cairo University students on Saturday night.

Today Egypt is close as never before to the triumph of Islam at all the state levels, he said.

“Today we can establish Sharia law because our nation will acquire well-being only with Islam and Sharia. The Muslim Brothers and the Freedom and Justice Party will be the conductors of these goals,” he said.
THIS is what Obama calls "a milestone in the country's transition to democracy"...

And let's not forget this guy won with a majority of votes.

Wasn't he freely elected by the people?
What would you have our president do go pee on him?

I like it!

Democratic elections by unwise people do not guarantee good results.

I'd ask your opinion, but out of deference for this glorious democratic expression of Islam, women should remain silent in their homes, attentive to the needs of their husbands.

He won a democratic election. What, exactly, isn't democratic about it? Why shouldn't our president congratulate him and speak of him as he would any other leader who was just elected? So, we don't like the fact that their going to use their chosen mythology as the basis of their laws. Big ****ing deal. It's not our country. We didn't vote, THEY did.

I don't like the fact that some of our laws are based in mythology either, but at least I do have a right to bitch about that since it's MY country. Should we just stop being diplomatic with any country who has laws that we don't agree with?

Along with the congratulations we out to issue unambiguous guidence on our position such as the Camp David accords which the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate wants to "reexamine."

Nobody is contending the election wasn't democratic...

The contention is that he will REMOVE democracy once settled into power...
