Default State of the Union registers at 8th grade reading level

I ran across this today while looking for something else. For supposedly being the smartest guy in the room this is kind of pathetic. Either he doesn't think to highly of the American people, (which is my bet,) or he is no where near being as smart as his obamatrons think.

Quote:
President Obama's 2012 State of the Union address again rated at an 8th grade comprehension level on the Flesch-Kincaid readability test the third lowest score of any State of the Union address since 1934.

The University of Minnesota's Smart Politics conducted an analysis on the last 70 State of the Union addresses and found that President Obama's three addresses have the lowest grade average of any modern president. "Obama's average grade-level score of 8.4 is more than two grades lower than the 10.7 grade average for the other 67 addresses written by his 12 predecessors," they conclude.

"The Flesch-Kincaid test is designed to assess the readability level of written text, with a formula that translates the score to a U.S. grade level. Longer sentences and sentences utilizing words with more syllables produce higher scores. Shorter sentences and sentences incorporating more monosyllabic words yield lower scores," the University of Minnesota's Eric Ostermeier explains.

Polysyllabic words that you won't hear in one of Pres. Obama's speeches:
Constitution
Transparency
Cooperation
Bi-partisan

he uses those words all the time

usually when he also has to use the word 'obstructionist'

The average reading level in the United States is commonly accepted to be around 8th or 9th grade. I am not sure if the average listening comprehension level is the same but I think that a safe assumption.

The State if the Union Address is intended to communicate with all Americans not to impress those with big vocabularies.

Summarizing several studies done in the United States and Canada, the average reading skill level was estimated to be at around the 8th to 9th grade (University of Utah Health Sciences Center).

What you just said is that the previous presidents were talking ABOVE the constituency and it's a good thing Obama's dumbing it down...

So do you prefer that the President talk above the average comprehension level?

Oh absolutely!...

I'd HOPE everyone runs to the dictionary or the net to LEARN instead of "Grog says this bad" and "Grog says this good"...

I was taught in both creative writing and various management seminars never to write or talk over the heads of my audience. To do so is to not communicate. And the object of the State of the Union Address should be to communicate.

I would prefer that all politicians dumb it down if that means that the American public actually understands what is being said instead of turning to some media talking heads to have it explained.

Maybe he was being kind to the people who voted for the newbie conservatives.

He has to make his speeches so that Republicans can understand what he's saying, if he was just speaking to the Democrats it might be better.
