Citing deficit, Obama freezing federal worker pay - Yahoo! News

I think this is an appropriate move. I have not had a raise in two years and I work for a company that actually shows a profit.

It's too little, too late.

Massive cuts to the Gov't Payrolls will help, freezing pay hikes does little to help the situation.

28 billion is nothing to sneeze at. His broader point was that we all will have to sacrifice. There has been and will be more cuts. They all add up.

I agree. I wish everyone in this country would send me just $1. I would be very rich with just that small "sacrifice" from each person.

It's not 28 billion, don't be dishonest. You're citing a 10 year "savings". Assuming all pay is frozen for 10 years, he's calling for a 2 year halt.

How about we extend this retroactively to 4 years ago and cut Fed. employment back to 2006 levels? Or even better, we go back about 100 years and set Fed. employment to the levels (per capita, of course) in 1910..

A couple of points...

First, it's NOT a pay freeze...

It's a freeze on the inflation costs calculated from year to year...raises are still in...

Second, civil servants work on a grade scale...If they are maxed out at their current level, all theirs bosses have to do is promote them to the next level up...

Expect that in the next two years...there will be articles saying "the people who have jumped in the GS levels increased like never before!"...

5 Billion over that 2 year period. 28 billion over 5 years and 60 billion over 10 years. The saving extend out because employees won't get get "make up" raises after the 2 years. If you get a 2% raise ever year and now won't for the next 2 years, you don't get a 6% raise during year 3. This means the saving extend out over the years to come.

Where did you see that raises will continue? Not seeing it in the articles I've read. Your second point is true, but as long as the saving remain, that shouldn't be an issue. I think those that will be able to get raises through promotions will be limited.
