WASHINGTON President Barack Obama will mix campaigning with a discussion on the economy during a trip to Missouri this week.

The White House says Obama will travel to Kansas City on Thursday to discuss the economy with workers at Smith Electric Vehicles.

Later Thursday, Obama will raise money for Senate candidate Robin Carnahan. Carnahan is the leading Democratic candidate in the race to replace retiring Republican Sen. Kit Bond. Rep. Roy Blunt is the Republican front-runner.

Pairing an official event with a political appearance lets the White House bill taxpayers rather than Carnahan's campaign for most of the president's travel costs.

Basic accounting and a customary practice. Nothing out of the ordinary here.

Very true, but, when you had candidate obama going around the country promising to change the way things worked in Washington you would have thought he meant it. However, as it has become painfully obvious he lied about changing the way Washington works.

True.. But I never liked this way of doing business.. They raise millions what is a trip to get help from the POTUS going to cost him?

I see it this way he is all of America's President. So no matter which party some of the costs should be on the party member seeking the Presidents help.
Say after Obama does the thing at Smith Electric Vehicles, Senate candidate Robin Carnahan, should pay the costs or the Dem Party.

After all this portion of the trip isn't helping all Americans. Just saying.

This ISN'T about how Washington works. This IS about how accounting works. If you go out of town to a conference on company business, the company is going to pay round trip and for at least one night of hotel plus some other expenses depending upon the nature and length of your stay. If you choose to take a couple of days vacation while you're there, the hotel and other expenses are on you for the non-business related days, but the company is still paying for your return as the cost would have been incurred by them anyway.

Accounting is accounting is accounting...

They are actually paying part of the costs per the article.

But the rules for travel expenses are the same. Government accounting is different than for-profit accounting as in balance sheet information and blah blah blah, BUT the rules for expenses do not change across spectrums. You must show business intent AND keep detailed receipts AND if you stay longer for personal business, the expenses are on you (or whomever you bill out to).
