I agree with you that it is a poor strategy to simply fire up one's base, while ignoring independents.
That said, I consider it much too early for polls to be at all meaningful.
Moreover, polls of the
popular vote are
never meaningful. (After all, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in 2016--by almost three percentage points--and it did her absolutely no good, whatsoever.)
