But this deserves an asterisk by it. (Why? Because the sitting president at that time--Gerald Ford--was never elected by the people. He was merely a stand-in for Richard Nixon--who resigned in disgrace in 1974.)
I’m confused by what you’re trying to describe. Ford won the Republican nomination in 1976 and lost to Carter. He did not run in 1980.

You are correct. According to most sources, he considered a run in 1980--but ultimately decided against it. (In other words, he could have run again--but did not choose to do so.)

I don't think the democrats would be stupid enough to run more than several people. They might end up with someone winning the primary who isn't their pick to be president and doesn't stand a chance at winning the general election. A dozen or so candidates can dilute or spread the votes out thin giving a crank candidate a better chance at winning the primary.
