Since the planet Earth doesn't have a birth certificate to record its formation, scientists have spent hundreds of years struggling to determine the age of the planet. By dating the rocks in the ever-changing crust, as well as neighbors such as the moon and visiting meteorites, scientists have calculated that Earth is 4.54 billion years old, with an error range of 50 million years.

I, too, misread it as "4 billion."

Actually, the dinosaurs went extinct about 65 million years ago...

The belief in "Young Earth" theory--i.e. that the Earth is only a little more than 2,000 years old--is based upon an addition of all the "begats" in the Book of Genesis: X begat Y; Y begat Z; etc.; and than estimating the length of time for each generation.

But it is my understanding that ancient Near Eastern genealogies are notoriously selective: "X begat Y" may mean only that X was the great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather of Y.

So do I.

The oldest known organisms to have lived on earth are Prokaryotes. Less than a MM in size they are believed to be the first life on the planet at about 93 million years ago.

The earth is 4.54 billion years old. Science fact I believe. +/- 0.05 billion years..
