Sean Penn to play Harvey Milk in film
Quote:
"If I were gay, would I want this a-hole playing a role model in the gay community."...Personally, no way... So the larger question is what I'm asking... If you want to see a movie because of the storyline, will the actors/actresses influence your decision on whether or not to see it?...

To answer your first question, although I can't speak for anyone who is gay, I don't know that Sean Penn is an asshole. I also don't know that he is not an asshole. To what are you referring?

Well politics is different (for me) when it comes to actors and artists. I mean they are all pretty liberal it seems. If I boycotted every actor I thought disagreed with my politics I'd never watch anything but the news. Plus I'm sure I would have to boycott Leonardo's films. And that ain't gonna happen!

If there are two blatantly Liberal actors, it depends on their audaciousness of what they're saying... I'd see Robin Williams before Richard Gere or Alec Baldwin...

This question can also be relegated to entertainers of all sorts(musicians, TV stars, comedians, etc.)...
I like U2 songs, but would never go to a concert...You KNOW there's a break from the music coming for lecture time... ![]()

I like Sean Penn - and U2, for that matter.
I will wait to see the reviews before seeing the movie - there has already been a movie about Milk - unless this is a really good film, I don't see any reason to see it. I don't care about the personal lives of actors - their job is to NOT be what they are in real life. |

I was living in southern Georgia when the Chixie Dicks became famous.
I never liked their singing. And my neighbor (and these were BIG lots with plenty of room to keep to yourself) made it her business to give a "Commercial Poultry" concert EVERY Saturday morning! So if I was ever remotely interested in finding out what their music was all about-that killed it right there. Much later I did hear a song one of them did about a soldier and I really liked it. But I still think the only thing their band needs is a good singer. Then, like turning off a water faucet, people all over America quit buying their records. I guess they felt strongly about the war and George Bush or they wouldn't have made statements. And I believe in freedom of speech. But what did they expect? Their core listeners were mostly conservative and if nothing else very patriotic. But dramatic actors appeal to a wide range of types. I'm not sure there is a formula for people who watch Sean Penn ilk films. And remember gays are a diverse group. Some are men. Some are women. Some are conservative in every other way but gay rights. If we believe Senator Craig is really a closet homosexual, then we can deduce some gays are against gay rights. ![]() So I'm assuming gays are as diverse in their thoughts on boycotts.

let's remember that the "boycott" of Dixie Chicks was very short-lived - they rebounded bigger than ever, selling more albums and winning more awards and getting bigger audiences than they had BEFORE all the drama.

First, they've had ONE song in the last 6 years that did anything...Considering they had FOURTEEN in the 5 years before the remarks, if you call that a rebound, then I suggest you call Webster's and have them change the definition... ![]() Quote:

And keep in mind that the Dixie Chicks are mainstream now and not country...They left the conservative country core and now has an audience that outnumbers just country...The reception should've been BIGGER based on that alone!... As far as awards go, you know damn well they got their awards because of what they said and not what they've sung...In fact, both MTV and the ACLU gave them awards for exactly that...Nothing to do with music or anything, just "We agree with you...Here's an award."... I don't deny they still got some support out there...But, as in your words, "rebounding, selling more albums, and getting bigger audiences"?... Please... ![]()
