Sean Penn to play Harvey Milk in film

Quote:
NEW YORK, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Hollywood actor Sean Penn has signed on to play gay-rights icon Harvey Milk in "Milk," a bio-pic directed by Gus Van Sant, Focus Features said Friday.

An activist and politician, Milk was the first openly gay man elected to public office in the United States.

In 1977, he was voted to the city supervisors' board of San Francisco.

The following year, he and the mayor were shot to death by another city supervisor, Dan White.

Co-financed by Focus and Groundswell Productions, "Milk" will be the first non-documentary feature to explore the man's life and career.

Penn has starred in the films "Mystic River" and "21 Grams," while Van Sant has helmed "My Own Private Idaho" and "To Die For."

"Gus Van Sant is the perfect artist to bring to the screen the extraordinary story of Harvey Milk," Focus CEO James Schamus said in a statement.

Groundswell CEO Michael London added: "The Focus team is the best in the business when it comes to provocative, socially relevant movies with world-class talent like Gus Van Sant and Sean Penn. We're thrilled that they share our passion for telling the story of Harvey Milk."
I started this thread for informational purpose to the "gay contingency" here, but I got to thinking...

"If I were gay, would I want this a-hole playing a role model in the gay community."...Personally, no way...

So the larger question is what I'm asking...

If you want to see a movie because of the storyline, will the actors/actresses influence your decision on whether or not to see it?...

To answer your second question first - yes. I already decided not to see Beowulf, because I don't want my money to support Jolie. I have problems with her taking a man away from his wife. Call it crazy, but I just can't push that aside to go watch a film she is probably superb in. However, I had no such qualms awhile back when Jack Nicholson left his old wife for a younger woman. Maybe he's already ingrained on the public conscience as an icon or maybe I don't equate it with her actions.
To answer your first question, although I can't speak for anyone who is gay, I don't know that Sean Penn is an asshole. I also don't know that he is not an asshole. To what are you referring?

I'm surprised you don't know...

He's a political activist and good friends with Hugo Chavez...He's famous for going abroad and attacking America in countries considered enemies...

No I didn't know. I knew someone was involved with Chavez, but I didn't know it was him.
Well politics is different (for me) when it comes to actors and artists. I mean they are all pretty liberal it seems. If I boycotted every actor I thought disagreed with my politics I'd never watch anything but the news.
Plus I'm sure I would have to boycott Leonardo's films. And that ain't gonna happen!

Well of course there's a LEVEL of dissent if one chooses the first option to the poll...

If there are two blatantly Liberal actors, it depends on their audaciousness of what they're saying...

I'd see Robin Williams before Richard Gere or Alec Baldwin...

This question can also be relegated to entertainers of all sorts(musicians, TV stars, comedians, etc.)...

I like U2 songs, but would never go to a concert...You KNOW there's a break from the music coming for lecture time...

I like Sean Penn - and U2, for that matter.

I will wait to see the reviews before seeing the movie - there has already been a movie about Milk - unless this is a really good film, I don't see any reason to see it.

I don't care about the personal lives of actors - their job is to NOT be what they are in real life.

I was living in southern Georgia when the Chixie Dicks became famous.
I never liked their singing. And my neighbor (and these were BIG lots with plenty of room to keep to yourself) made it her business to give a "Commercial Poultry"

concert EVERY Saturday morning! So if I was ever remotely interested in finding out what their music was all about-that killed it right there. Much later I did hear a song one of them did about a soldier and I really liked it. But I still think the only thing their band needs is a good singer.

Then, like turning off a water faucet, people all over America quit buying their records.
I guess they felt strongly about the war and George Bush or they wouldn't have made statements. And I believe in freedom of speech. But what did they expect? Their core listeners were mostly conservative and if nothing else very patriotic.
But dramatic actors appeal to a wide range of types. I'm not sure there is a formula for people who watch Sean Penn ilk films.
And remember gays are a diverse group. Some are men. Some are women. Some are conservative in every other way but gay rights. If we believe Senator Craig is really a closet homosexual, then we can deduce some gays are against gay rights.
So I'm assuming gays are as diverse in their thoughts on boycotts.

let's remember that the "boycott" of Dixie Chicks was very short-lived - they rebounded bigger than ever, selling more albums and winning more awards and getting bigger audiences than they had BEFORE all the drama.

What?!?!?!...

First, they've had ONE song in the last 6 years that did anything...Considering they had FOURTEEN in the 5 years before the remarks, if you call that a rebound, then I suggest you call Webster's and have them change the definition...

Quote:
1997 "I Can Love You Better" 77

1998 "There's Your Trouble" 36
"Wide Open Spaces" 41

1999 "You Were Mine" 34
"Tonight the Heartache's on Me" 46
"Ready to Run" 39
"Cowboy Take Me Away" 27

2000 "Cold Day in July" 65
"Without You" 31

2001 "If I Fall You're Going Down With Me" 38
"Some Days You Gotta Dance" 55

2002 "Long Time Gone" 7
"Landslide" 7
"Travelin' Soldier" 25

2006 "Not Ready to Make Nice" 4
Second, as far as "getting bigger audiences...well...you be the judge...From Billboard...

Quote:
Out-of-the-gate ticket sales for the Dixie Chicks' upcoming Accidents & Accusations tour are far below expectations and several dates will likely be cancelled or postoned.

Initial ticket counts for the 20-plus arena shows that went on sale last weekend were averaging 5,000-6,000 per show in major markets and less in secondaries, according to sources contacted by Billboard. Venue capacities on the tour generally top 15,000.

In contrast, the band's new album, "Taking the Long Way," sold 526,000 units in its first week, according to Nielsen Soundscan, the third largest sales week of 2006. The album remains No. 1 on The Billboard 200 this week.

Despite those numbers, early ticket sales are clearly not meeting projections. The plug was pulled on public on-sales for shows in Indianapolis (Aug. 23), Oklahoma City (Sept. 26), Memphis (Sept. 27) and Houston (Sept. 30) because of tepid pre-sales in a national promotion with Target stores.

The Memphis show has been pulled off the route and the status of the shows in Indianapolis, Houston and Oklahoma City remains uncertain. Industry speculation has it that much or all of the tour may be postponed. At the very least, it is likely routing and capacity will be reconfigured.
Third, they did well on their recent album but not "Dixie Chicks well"...

Quote:
The album has sold 2,290,489 copies in the US as of July 11, 2007
But here's what they USED to do...

Quote:
Fly is the fifth album by American country band Dixie Chicks, released in 1999 (see 1999 in music). The album was very successful for the group receiving diamond status by the RIAA on June 25, 2002 in the USA, having shifted 10 million units.
That's 3.3 million PER YEAR for 3 years!...the recent album doesn't even have that in the FIRST year, when most albums are sold...By the time they get to 3 years, it MIGHT total 5 or maybe 6 mil...

And keep in mind that the Dixie Chicks are mainstream now and not country...They left the conservative country core and now has an audience that outnumbers just country...The reception should've been BIGGER based on that alone!...

As far as awards go, you know damn well they got their awards because of what they said and not what they've sung...In fact, both MTV and the ACLU gave them awards for exactly that...Nothing to do with music or anything, just "We agree with you...Here's an award."...

I don't deny they still got some support out there...But, as in your words, "rebounding, selling more albums, and getting bigger audiences"?...

Please...
