Yeah. I remember hearing people talk about the inflation. But I had two jobs all the time and could have worked a third if I'd had time and energy. I spent a short time in Alabama and Birmingham was rocking. Then I moved to Texas. Wow! The sky was the limit on your imagination and entrepreneurship!
I did return to Alabama for a visit in the mid eighties after the steel mills closed down, and it was heartbreaking. Then I guess the whole United states got laid off and heard there was work in Texas. I still had my job, but they became scarcer and scarcer as the tent cities went up and then the hostile bids, the union busting, and the influx of people took a toll. Texas was never to be the same again. We went through some really hard times there, but that is where I went back to school. And that was a miracle. It would be embarrassing for us both for me to tell you just how hard it was.
After I voted for him, I got a real sour taste in my mouth for Ronald Regan. He did help us get our respect back after Vietnam. And that meant a lot. But if I ever truly hated someone I had never even met, he would have come the closest.
Though the words he spoke spoke to me, as I'm sure they did thousands of people. We needed to hear some of those words to give us courage and pride again. I especially liked his idea about getting rid of welfare.
And I hope I live to see the day it is abolished.
