Default Should drone operators get awards that outrank purple hearts and bronze stars?

Should doing what amounts to playing a video game in the comfort of a air conditioned office get you an award that outranks something you can get in combat like a purple heart of a bronze star?

I say no.Next thing you know they will want to give you the purple heart for carpal tunnel syndrome. This is a slap in the face to people what actually went to combat.

New medal for modern warfare sparks strong reaction - News - Stripes

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — The news that a medal has been created to honor the “extraordinary actions” of drone pilots and other servicemembers acting far from the battlefield has triggered strong reactions about medals and their value.

In one of his last official acts, outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Wednesday announced the creation of the Distinguished Warfare Medal, to recognize “extraordinary achievements that directly impact on combat operations, but do not involve acts of valor or physical risks that combat entails.”

The medal will rank immediately below the Distinguished Flying Cross — and higher than the Bronze Star — in order of precedence, according to a Defense Department chart. It can be awarded for any actions after Sept. 11, 2001.

I can see them getting a medal but not one above a bronze star

I can see a medal, but it should rank just below the GCM(Good Conduct Medal).

If they are going to give one in this case below a GCM, but why? All they do is from afar, no stress is now involved and one isn't being shot at.

The Military like to give out medals, yet in combat one need a a officer and at least to others just to get one recommended. In the few I have heard about while in the Nam. And not one guy got it in his duty tour while in country from my unit unless it was a Purple Heart.

And then the process is started and it does take some time. With a lot of investigating.

But this is just in my humble opinion...

The National Defense Service medal is sufficient for them.

I don't know what medals or awards are given to non-combat personnel, but they should be the very same here...

Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal.
Any award for drone strikes should be above the NDSM and below the GCM.
A proper name for it? How about the Electronic Button Pusher Medal.
