Default The American Family Association

latest bulletins are now removing vowels from the words 'gay' and 'homosexual.'

Do you think they're...

Equating homosexuality and gays with G-d?

Too stupid to know how to spell?

Too cheap to get their keyboards repaired?

Doing everything possible to denigrate and dehumanize gays?

edited to add: I can't make the damn poll option show up.

Post Re: The American Family Association

What strikes me as hilarious is how they will call for a boycott against a motor corporation, and then effectively creating a situation where (according to the AFA's scenario) *Ford heard from the AFA, then changed its rules*.
They WANT the type of power they ascribe to "g_ys".

They are pulling the same tired crap we have seen from homophobes time and time again. I've talked to people who refused to refer to homosexuals as "gays", ignoring the fact that the ORIGIN of the "gay" reference towards homosexuals didn't come from "gays" in the first place. From "their" description, calling it "gay" is something homosexuals want as a positive association, ignoring the negative connotations like "that's so gay" and others.
I've even seen somebody claim that "homosexual" is a word originated by the gays, claiming that gays created the association from "homo sapien" to make their situation seem more normal.

The people we're talking about aren't normal in their "intelligence" or rationality. Way below average...
Wayyy above normal in their prejudice.
If we had an organization which was so overt as to their prejudice towards Christians as this group is towards gays, the religious right would throw a fit.
(Insert mundane ACLU joke here, ignoring their focus on "separation of church and state" and how they have actually DEFENDED Christianity on many occasions.)

How old are you, anyway? Because gay has been used to mean homosexual or effeminate since some time in the 19th century.

Perhaps in certain circles. Beatniks and other sub cultures have been known to use slang that was later absorbed into the main stream.
But I never heard them referred to as "gay" till probably the seventies. It was a new phrase among our crowd anyway.
We were discussing use of the word as opposed to "queer" (which also had other connotations), one day, and I remember my sister's best friend (a homosexual) saying, "There's nothing gay about it. I prefer to be labeled anything but 'gay'."
But that was when not many were out yet. And he was out and life was very difficult for him sometimes.

I am seventeen. I shall remain that age until the day they scrape me off my sewing bench or fishing chair, and haul my carcass to the dump!

I don't remember how old I was when I first heard it but it was about the same time that I heard "queer."

Where I grew up, "the main stream" didn't use any words for homosexual before the seventies. But kids did. And the popular words at my school in the sixties were queer, gay and lesbo.

At some point gay people got tired of it being used as a slur and decided to embrace it. I find it extremely amusing that it upsets those who want to insult us now. They have had to look for new slurs. Poor babies!

By the way, have you ever heard the term, "gay blades."

It dates to long before either of us was born; it was certainly part of the main stream and part of its meaning was prissy or effeminate.

I have heard it, but it's been awhile. I don't think I knew what it meant at the time. One of my cousins worked in a club that was frequented by homosexuals and "artsy" types. Authors, painters and the like. It had wonderful music. Live bands or solos and sometimes poets and comedians. I don't remember her ever using the word gay. She said "queer" for men and "lesbian" for women. She made some good friends there among the staff and patrons. She had traveled quite a bit and I think she was a little ahead of popular culture.
But my own introduction to gay couples came at the age of about four or five. And I just called them Gert and Ollie cause that was their names. They were two women and I thought one was a man, until I called Ollie Oliver and Gert corrected me. They owned a little shop where they sold souvenirs and garden statues and "Florida Oranges". They gave me a wonderful book, "Paintings by the Masters". And once invited me for kool-aid and brownies with their niece.
The reason I even found out they were "different" was because of a very busy body who ended up seeing them run out of town. My mother stopped by his fence one day and got out of the car and gave him the best tongue thrashing I have ever heard in my life. She used words like "insipid little creature" and "slug". To this day it makes me smile.

I have never know the meanings to be that.

I learned that a gay blade was a dashing womanizer - and a talker - one who would spread rumors about his amorous conquests, of which there were many.

I have never known it to mean prissy or effeminate.

In today's parlance: a player
