But I don't think anybody would contest the fact that it also is a reference to a gay person, perjoratively.
Regardless, it still has a definition as a bundle of wood.

The word "gay" originally had a meaning of "happily excited : merry "
Like f@ggot, the reference to gay men was added later.
Pointing repeatedly to references where it uses other meanings of the word "gay" does not refute the fact that it has a long history in being a perjorative against homosexuals.
I have no problem accepting the fact of words being used to refer to homosexuals for the past century or even longer.

But when someone comes along and maligns saltwn for her accurate assertion about the word Gay and his insinuation that she must be ancient for knowing this (rather than the truth, which is more likely to be that he is just a shumb dit) (by the way shumb dit is a pejorative that was used since appx. 1927 to describe, in polite company, someone who was a dumb shit) I take great exception and hope that said individual will leave this thread better educated for his trouble.

The fact is that, by the 60s & 70s, the use of gay to denote happiness was archaic. Honestly, when was the last time you heard someone say something like "I am feeling gay today," meaning, "I feel happy"??

I have never seen or heard it used that way anywhere but in very old novels and in movies set in the early 20th century or before.
Well, I guess you aren't very observant are you? So, with your limited frame of reference and myopia about the world around you, why should anyone take seriously anything you might say?

I grew up in the north Alabama foothills of the Appalachians and we speak archaic/colloquial English with the best of them

But I have still never heard anyone say "I feel gay" meaning "I feel happy."

It HAS fallen out of use and I'd guess it was quite dramatically abandoned by the straight culture when the word was co-opted by the sexually conversant.

I remember when I was a 12 year old and an adult male friend of the family acted in a surrogate fatherly way to get me 'broken in,' as it were.

I recall he asked me if I was Gay. I was a happy go lucky child and I said yes. Then he did a double take and asked me a in a different way. 'Are you saying you are a fairy?'

'No! Is that what Gay means? I thought it meant happy.'

A short time later he to took me to a brothel and I got me some 'trim.'

Urban Dictionary: trim

But even though you may not have heard of it in Dogpatch, USA, trust these references that have been brought here to this thread for your shumb dit benefit. Gay once meant HAPPY.

And I'm sure you will be astounded to discover that there was once a weight loss candy called AYDS.

?!

the homosexual community HARDLY co-opted the word.

it's a word that the STRAIGHT COMMUNITY used to denigrate homosexuals

it's either totally dishonest - or incredibly ignorant - to suggest that gays "co-opted" the word

OR - did you mean that when it was a nasty mean-spirited slur it was acceptable to also use the word to mean happy. But that when, over a century, the word lost its sting and venom, it no longer was an acceptable alternative to happy?

by the way - your post was nasty and made you look like a pretty dumb shit and a major asshole - was that intentional?

Personally, I have no problem with Saltwn's experience.
I have known other people with similar experiences.

In regards to my response, your "bullshit" response was a little too brief to relay the position you just laid out.

Although I still have difficulty with this...
To pretend that homosexuals, at a time that homosexuality was very much still maligned, had the power to coerce or push 95% of society towards using "gay" to describe us...

That's just plain absurd. Boggles the senses to think anybody would find that realistic.
The history of the application of "gay" towards homosexuals is largely perjorative.

The very story you use to follow this statement is a perfect example of how it was utilized in the negative.
Unless you're going to pretend that your adult male friend of the family was using "fairy" as a positive descriptor for gays?

Surely you're jesting with the pretense that homosexuals "co-opted" gays...

I never said that it didn't once mean happy. I said it is and has been archaic for decades.

I am familiar with the weight loss product also. Little chewy candies that came in caramel and chocolate, I believe.

Your nasty hateful opinions as to my intelligence have been noted. Bite me.

I'm pretty sure we (my crowd) started using "gay" in high school, because we thought homosexuals preferred it to other terms which did sound derogatory to us. Never knew gay was originated in the straight society, but that is kind of interesting.
A word like "queer" sounded like you were talking about a deranged person.
At the same time we were enlightening each other that people who's ancestors came from Africa should be called "Black", not "Negro" as that word was too close to the derogatory word Spanish sailors used, and "colored" was also thought to be derogatory. Now I'm not sure if all this was correct or even necessary. We informed each other "African American" was better. Then, low and behold, it was announced "people of color" was the most correct phrase if one wanted to generalize about that particular demographic!

I surmise (by some of the posts here) that individually and culturally, people who choose partners of the same sex, have arrived at a point in time where they feel they should control their projected perception. Just as African Americans wanted to reidentify their place in history/society/humanity/Americana, so do homosexual people want control over that thing that everyone may claim does not matter, but ends up defining their existence in a sound bite.

Untrue...

It actually happened with the word "queer" also...It was considered derogatory UNTIL homosexuals themselves CO-OPTED the word...

"We're here...We're queer...get used to it!"...

That's textbook co-opting...

So, tell us. Are you an ignorant butch or an ignorant queen?

Did I say that the Gay community co-opted the word? The sexually conversant means those talking about or referring to sex.

And when I'm talking to you, you'll feel a tug on your dog collar.

Hm'kay?

Everyone in the human population who discusses sex is sexually conversant.
